Genevan Joins Jazz Great in Free Concert Tonight at NIU; Philharmonic Concert Monday

The NIU Jazz Ensemble, which includes Genevan Chris Werve, will perform tonight in DeKalb, while the NIU Philharmonic's last concert of the semester is scheduled for Monday evening.

Under the direction of Ron Carter, the nationally renowned NIU Jazz Ensemble will perform its fall concert tonight (Thursday, Nov. 17) with international jazz trumpet player Terell Stafford and School of Music faculty saxophonist Rich Moore.

As recently pointed out, saxophonist Chris Werve of Geneva is a member of the Jazz Ensemble. Werve is a senior at NIU, majoring in jazz studies and music education.

The music begins at 8 p.m. in the Duke Ellington Ballroom of the Holmes Student Center. The concert is free and open to the public, and the ballroom is accessible to all.

Music lovers in the western suburbs also might be interested the NIU Philharmonic’s final concert of the semester, which will be directed by Brazilian-born conductor Lucia Matos. The concert will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21.

On the program is Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony (New World Symphony), as well as Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto with NIU piano professor William Goldenberg as soloist, and a new composition by faculty assistant professor David Maki.

Free and open to the public, the concert will take place in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall of the NIU Music Building. Before the concert begins, John K. Novak will offer a 7 p.m. multimedia presentation titled “More than Americana in a European Frame: Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony.”
