Patch Picks: 5 Interesting Classes for Adults

Education doesn't have to stop with graduation. Learn a new skill or brush up on an old hobby with some of our area's most innovative adult education programs.

One of the most important "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is "Sharpening the Saw." Today's Patch Picks offer some innovative classes that can help you do that, or maybe check off another bullet point on your bucket list.

(1) Learn piano from the Geneva Park District

On Aug. 9, Geneva residents can start signing up for fall 2011 Park District programs. The Park District has classes designed just for adults on many topics, from wildlife to music.

One of the best things adults can do for their continued well-being is to learn a new skill, especially a musical talent. On Oct. 15, you can bring out your inner Liberace and learn how to play the piano in only one session. This class titled, "Just Once Piano," is taught by piano instructor Albert Brown. Brown will show you piano basics and industry secrets helping you learn the instrument in under three hours. There is a $30 fee for course materials.

(2) Learn about wildlife at Peck Farm Park

The Geneva Park District also offers a group of classes in partnership with the Kane County Forest Preserve and Peck Farm Interpretative center called, "Learn From the Experts." These sessions give adults an introspective look into many different topics on wildlife. You can participate in a "Learn From the Experts field trip class on Sat. Oct. 29, titled "Cranes in Migration," which highlights the Sandhill Crane and its migration through Illinois toward warmer waters.

(3) Learn to ice skate at the Fox Valley Ice Arena

Adults can learn how to ice skate with The Skate School at . This program is designed for teens and adults who will learn at their own pace mastering basic, intermediate, and advanced skating skills. Classes for the 2011 fall session start Aug. 30.

(4) Take an art class or learn blacksmithing at Fine Line

One of the most innovative and unique adult education centers in the country is the , located in St. Charles. Fine Line has art classes that go far beyond basic knitting and painting with watercolors. Instead, adults can learn how to knit Estonian lace or become an expert in the eastern philosophies of Tao watercolor techniques.

You can also learn blacksmithing and iron work, even creating your own Viking belt ax out of forged metal. Beading, paper and glass work classes are also available. To see Fine Line's full brochure of fall classes, please click here.

(5) Learn how to save a life

The teaches classes on CPR for healthcare providers and the general public. You can learn this life-saving technique with monthly classes throughout the rest of 2011. For more information, please contact the Geneva Fire Department.
