Tri-Cities Talk: Community Reacts to Gun Accident at Sportsmen's Club

Tri-Cities residents, Patch wants to hear from you on the issues that affect you and your neighbors.

Welcome to Tri-Cities Talk—a regular feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on current issues facing Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles.

Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a conversation between Tri-Cities residents in recent days on local Patch Facebook pages.

This week, people weighed in with their reactions to news that 10 people were hit when a St. Charles man accidentally fired his shotgun at the St. Charles Sportsmen's Club in Elburn. Although it was an accident, the incident elicited strong opinions on gun safety and appropriate precautions from residents throughout the Tri-Cities.

Jennifer Reilly: I'm sure this man thought he was a safe gun owner until yesterday. This is just another reason why I am not thrilled about conceal carry. Most gun owners when asked believe they are responsible. But many people were hospitalized yesterday due to a man who thought he was being conscientious. Luckily nobody was killed. — Geneva Patch Facebook

Sue Nyenhuis: I think more people are killed by drunk drivers than with guns. So, lets have more rules about cars and alcoholic beverages. I have heard using spoons make people fat, so don't forget new flatware rules too! — St. Charles Patch Facebook

Craig Burgess: Snap caps are commonly used to protect the firing pin from being damaged by dry firing. Why would anybody use a snap cap that even remotely resembled a live round? All breaches should remain open and empty until safely on the firing line. — Geneva Patch Facebook

Jason Nickel: It was a accident. I'm sure he is responsible for medical bills as well as open for lawsuits vs him. But as far as the law is concerned it was a mistake. As long as he had a valid foid card. I think he suffered enough. — St. Charles Patch Facebook

Mitch Flores: just a real bad case of User error... jeeze. — Batavia Patch Facebook

Mark Rench: Accidents are accidents for a reason, they can't be helped. Planning to do something is a whole different story. — Geneva Patch Facebook

Scott Harrison: There are already rules at gun clubs/gun ranges throughout the country, why should there be special punishments for an accident? — St. Charles Patch Facebook

Aaron Hollen: Wow that's crazy. Usually snap caps are distinctly different then a live round. — Batavia Patch Facebook
