Burns 2012: Transparency and Truth in the GOP Nomination for the Kane County Board Chair

Chris Lauzen holds transparency talk behind closed doors.

On Tuesday, my opponent in the race for the Republican nomination for chairman of the Kane County Board held what was originally billed as a "press conference." It turned out to be something altogether different.

To give a little background, last Friday (Jan. 13), there was a sponsored by the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce. The panel consisted of all the candidates for chairman: Democrats Sue Klinkhamer and Bill Sarto, and Republicans Chris Lauzen and me.

At that forum, Chris announced a press conference where he would discuss transparency in government. He invited all in attendance at the forum (some 150 people) to come and hear what he had to say.

However, when members of my staff or people even friendly to my campaign showed up, they were told by Chris, "I rented this room, you have to leave." The door was shut to all but the handful of his supporters present and several members of the press.

Let's pause here and appreciate the irony of holding a speech on transparency behind closed doors.

It is our understanding from reading several press reports that Chris spent most of his time attacking the current chairman of the county, who, as far as I can tell is not his opponent in the March 20 primary.

I will have more to say on this subject in a future post. Plus, I'll announce the time and place of our own press conference, open to all, that I'll be holding next week.
