Geneva Native Jim Colton Helps Raise $40K by Playing 108 Holes of Golf in One Day

Geneva volunteers in the news: The fund-raiser has turned out to be a very special event. And Geneva's Jim Colton makes it happen.

  • Editor's note: This story is courtesy of Aaron Kilburg, whose summary of the event is so good, it stands on its own. Geneva Patch also got permission from Jim Colton to republish items from this blog. And there's a wonderful story and amazing photos from Denver Post.

Former Geneva resident Jim Colton (class of 1992) has organized a fundraiser for a young man in Denver who was paralyzed this winter.

Jim belongs to Ballyneal golf club outside Denver, and when he heard former caddy Ben Cox (age 23) was paralyzed in a skiing accident, he decided he needed to do something. He came up with the idea of playing 108 holes this Saturday, June 20, to raise money.

The event has taken off, and Jim has already raised $40,000! Things have gone so well, the story of Jim's efforts and the bond he has made with Ben made the front of this Sunday's sports section in the Denver Post

Jim is still raising funds, and I thought something in the Patch might be a way to raise awareness and get the word out in his home town. Jim lives in Wheaton and his parents still live on the East Side of Geneva, so I'm sure folks in the area would be interested.

To say "The Ben Cox 108" has exceeded everybody's expectation would be a huge understatement.

Literally, when I came up with the idea, I figured that I'd e-mail 30-40 of my closest buddies and probably 25 of them would donate $100 each. Now we're over $37,000 and counting and the event has made it to the Denver Post. What an amazing thing.

Please check out the story to find out more about Ben and his family. It will be readily apparent why I'm motivated to make this event everything that it can be.
