Thief Uses Old Switcheroo to Steal Store Employee's iPhone

If you have information on this or any other crime in Geneva, please contact the Geneva Police Department at (630) 232-4736.

An unknown person apparently pulled off the old switcheroo to get away with a retail-store employee's iPhone.

According to Geneva police reports, someone took an iPhone 5 from an employee of Anew, 27 W. State St., sometime between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sept. 22.

The iPhone owner told police she left the phone sitting on the front counter of the store, and when she returned to look at it found that it had been replaced with an iPhone replica, sitting in the same spot the iPhone was located.

The replica iPhone was placed into evidence, and the police investigation is ongoing.

Because the serial number was unknown, the owner was unable to locate the stolen phone using the “find my iphone” application of www.icloud.com. Police advised the owner to try to locate the serial number to pursue locating the stolen phone.

The iPhone was valued at $200.
