HELP on the Way for Injured Dog Hit Near CVS

The Geneva Police Department has contacted local animal-rescue group to care for a dog injured by a vehicle Sunday near the intersection of East State Street and East Side Drive.

"Yesterday evening I spoke with a representative of HELP in an effort to find somewhere for the dog to go," Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said. "Long and short is, the emergency vet in St. Charles, where our officers took the dog, needed him moved to a different facility, as they handle emergency situations. We were working with our local vets to determine if they would be interested/able to take on the dog.  They were all great and very helpful and subsequently put us in touch with HELP."

HELP has agreed to take the dog and find it a foster home with hopes of finding the owner. Passarelli said the dog, described as a boxer/pitbull mix, will stay at the St. Charles veterinary hospital for a few more days.

"He is apparently doing better and is responding to treatment," Passarelli said.

According to its website, HELP is an all-volunteer animal rescue organization that provides medical care and shelter for stray and abandoned cats and dogs until they are adopted.

"The animals live in our volunteer’s homes. We feel that providing foster care in a home benefits the animal and the potential adopter. By fostering, we can work on health or behavioral issues with the animal, and the cat or dog may live in a loving, healthful environment until a suitable adoptive home is found," the website says.

Homeless pets typically are referred by police departments, veterinarians, other shelters and people in the community. Each animal is taken to a veterinarian for a thorough examination, vaccinations, worming, and spaying or neutering, then taken to a foster home for recovery from surgery, if necessary, socialization and evaluation.

HELP is essentially a no-kill organization.

"We do not have time limits on the animals in our care and we do not euthanize animals with health issues or non-terminal illness," the website says.
