ReplyWe've been trekking all the way up to Elgin while waiting for this one to open.
They've even got a great Thanksgiving line-up at a very reasonable price!

ReplyThanks Romeo,
You're smarter than many humans! Yet, you dogs are always ready to go get involved in whatever it is. We humans learn a lot from you!

ReplyDonna, thanks for bringing up the point "what we say we want in our kids vs. what we show our kids". Thank you also for telling us about Second Step.
One of the reasons you & I work with children, I think, is because IF we can help them get it right from the start, we may not need to take the corrective action subsequently.
Honest conflict will always occur in our world. Wherever two or more are gathered... there WILL be a difference of opinions. I grew up supporting unions and my husband works at a major global manufacturer in which the union eventually became so powerful that they almost caused the corporation to go belly up.
I can't solve all the ills of society; neither can you. If each of us works tirelessly for our cause, perhaps we can get a little bit closer.

ReplyAbsolutely! Folks, Ann reminds us that we have options; we're not helpless. SO true.
While campaign reform may not be an overnight achievement, we the people can raise discerning children AND keep telling our elected and wannabe elected that we want help choosing beyond the 'my opponent is evil' ads.
Thanks, Ann, for making choices more clear.

On the article Hey, Mom and Dad: When Is It OK for Kids to Start Watching Scary Movies?
Melissa Pazen

ReplyIt's important to be with our children and monitor how they handle scary movies.
"How old" depends on your child's personality. My daughter loves surprises & fright. She started watching these with friends & me all about them at about 11. She had begged for ferris wheels and roller-coasters from the age of four. My son still avoids being startled whenever possible.
Developmentally, young ones take a while to separate reality from fantasy/untruths/etc. I've yet to know a child younger than seven (7) who could handle something frightening.
I also have a friend who said that "Hook" was hard on her sons (9 and 7) because they worried about the dad when he was stuck in Hook's net. She stopped the movie (dvd) and talked with them about fantasy.

Thanks for your note. I find the skills I provided my children are now serving their adult selves well. They can discuss differences without anger or blaming; and they often get what they want!
When Chris was working for the Dave Chappell Show, one of the senior staff asked him to do something. His response was "you know, ___(colleague name)___ would be even better than I would at that. Do you want me to ask him or would you like to do it instead?" Surprisingly, Chris got a different assignment that he liked much better!
I love your name or handle! It resonates for me (although when I was a gawky child, my parents always told me it was a good thing they hadn't given me the middle name "Grace").
