Vikings hold onto a 28-26 win—a perfect record on the new, synthetic turf of Burgess Field.
In the inaugural football contest on the new, synthetic turf of Burgess Field, Geneva's sophomore football team made a big defensive stop, then held onto the ball in the final minutes for a 28-26 win over the Oswego Panthers. The Vikings went out to a 21-8 lead in the first quarter on runs of 30 yards and 14 yeards by quarterback Nick Derr followed by a 16-yard pass from Derr to Brock Perry. Oswego scored early on a 4-yard run by Ed Gamboa, and briefly led 8-7 after a 2-point conversion. Oswego scored again on a 2-yard run in the second quarter, but with 17 seconds left, Derr connected with Perry again to take a 28-14 lead at the half. Final score: St. Charles East 26, Geneva 7
St. Charles East's sophomore football team took a 14-0 halftime lead, and that was enough to hold off the Vikings in an Upstate Eight battle Friday at East. The Vikings made a charge to start the second half, holding East to three-and-out, then scoring on a Dan Santacaterina run with 4:38 showing. The run was set up by a nice hookup from Santacaterina to Pace Temple. But it was all Saints from there. The Vikings fumbled and East recovered on the 7-yard line, then punched it in for a 20-7 lead early in the fourth. They padded the lead with a 3-yard run by Mitch Munroe with 3:24 left in the game.
