A male teenager was taken into custody late Christmas morning after he was seen with a rifle near Wheeler Park, according to police and reader reports. The initial address on the police call was in the 400 block of North First Street (Route 31) near Stevens Street in Geneva. The incident took place at about 11:35 a.m. after police received two calls regarding a male of undetermined age crouching behind a dark-colored sports utility vehicle. While in custody, Geneva police determined that the teen was carrying an airsoft rifle, the Kane County Chronicle reports. The 58-year-old man who jumped out of a window Monday had passed an extensive background check, the building's director said.
The residents and staff members of a Route 31 apartment complex struggled to come to terms with the death of two residents after a murder-suicide there this week. Most of the Eden Supportive Living's 150-member community spoke with a counselor individually or in a group setting, said Barbara Lawrence, director of the apartment complex, on Wednesday. "We’re hanging in there," Lawrence said. "It’s a horrible tragedy, it’s affected everyone in the building." Police were called to the complex, 311 S. Lincolnway, Route 31 in North Aurora, on Monday night for a report of a suicidal resident. The resident, a 58-year-old man, jumped from his third-floor window. A 50-year-old woman was found dead Monday night in an apartment on Route 31, and the man suspected to be responsible for her death took his own life by jumping out of a window, police said. Police found Tomi Vandiver, of the 300 block of South Lincolnway (Route 31) in North Aurora, unresponsive in the 58-year-old man's apartment. She lived in the same building as the man. She was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to North Aurora police. Officers were dispatched at 8:51 p.m. Monday to Eden Supportive Living, 311 S. An Aurora man faces multiple drunken driving and related charges as a result of an Oct. 14 accident on Route 31 that left four people injured and shut down the roadway for more than three hours. Luis Avila Pina, 45, of the 400 block of New York Street, Aurora, was arrested at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he had been treated for his injuries in the crash. He is charged with aggravated DUI-great bodily harm; aggravated DUI-license revoked or suspended; aggravated DUI-no insurance; speeding, too fast for conditions; driving on a suspended or revoked license; and operating an uninsured vehicle. A quick response and police teamwork on Wednesday in North Aurora resulted in the arrest of two vehicle burglary suspects. Two 14-year-old boys from Joliet face charges in connection to a Wednesday morning car burglary. The incident occurred shortly before 9:18 a.m. in the 100 block of Overland Drive, according to a news release. On Wednesday morning the two teens entered a man's unlocked vehicle while it was parked in a parking lot in the 100 block of Overland Drive, according to an initial police investigation. The Illinois State Police will conduct a Roadside Safety Check (RSC) in Kane County during the hours of 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, until 4 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. According to Captain Joe Perez, the RSC will be held on the eastbound exit ramp from the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to Illinois Route 31. The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois. It's summer in Illinois, and that means road construction. Geneva residents who have to brave St. Charles' East Main Street on a daily basis well know the travails of road construction. Long lines of cars surrounded by the dusts of road construction as the Illinois Department of Transportation adding and widening lanes, new lighting and repairs bridge work along a nearly six-mile stretch of road between downtown St. Charles and DuPage Airport in West Chicago. The $39 million project is slated to be completed next year. Now IDOT announced a new project in St. Charles beginning July 23. If you're commuting from the Tri-Cities via I-90, here's a quick heads-up on ramp closures at the Route 31 interchange and some lane closures on Route 72 that start Aug. 7. The work is part of I-90 Roadway and Bridge Rehabilitation Project. According to a press release from the Illinois Tollway, the exit ramp from the eastbound Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) to northbound Route 31 and the eastbound entrance ramp from southbound Route 31 will close for one week beginning on Sunday, Aug. 7, for ramp reconstruction work. Additionally, traffic on Route 72 over I-90 will be reduced to one lane in each direction throughout August for deck patching work.
