Sportiva arrives after closure of Vertical Drop, pending closure of Donna’s Jewelry Box and the Sassy Fox in downtown St. Charles.
The Vertical Drop Ski & Patio Shop, 116 W. Main St., St. Charles, has closed—although when it did so is uncertain. A call to the shop on Thursday yielded only a recorded message that the retailer is closed until further notice, although mail to the store will continue to be collected there. The retailer had offered ski gear and patio merchandize since 1977. Two other St. Charles downtown retailers will close their doors May 31. While owners of both shops laid much of the blame on the economy, one also credited the changing nature of the downtown area to a destination spot that does not favor retail businesses. Owner Donna Chipp said May 31 is the last day of business for Donna's Jewelry Box, 111 E. Main St. It is the same day Marge DeLand …

The city of St. Charles will spend another $200,000 to demolish the building and redevelop the site as a parking lot, which would be completed by October.
The St. Charles City Council voted Monday night to approve the $800,000 purchase of a 5,600-square-foot building and adjacent 40-space parking lot along North 3rd Street that the city intends to use to improve parking in the area on the near Northwest Side. The city hopes to close on the purchase of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036, 119 N. 3rd St., on June 14, after negotiations began in October 2011, when Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036 approached the city about selling its property. After Monday’s City Council meeting, the city issued a press release trumpeting the purchase of the 35,000-square-foot site as a coup for future parking improvements in an area where parking is constrained. The city plans to spend another $200,000 to …

US Adventure RV is looking to move to St. Charles and sharing a building with the Fox River Harley-Davidson at 131 S. Randall Road.
St. Charles aldermen have taken hits in recent weeks in online comments complaining that not enough is being done to bring new businesses into town—even though the pace of the nation’s recovery from the Great Recession has put a damper on such efforts elsewhere. Monday night, however, Economic Development Director Chris Aiston unveiled to the St. Charles City Council Planning and Development Committee a proposed $250,000 incentives package to lure a new business here from Joliet, generating $45 million in sales over the first five years. During that same period, the business expects to create 21 jobs with an estimated payroll of $3.5 million. Aiston said the new business also is projected to create eight more indirect or induced jobs with …
