Unusual Accidents: Distracted Driving, Collisions With Animals

Four of the five accidents collected this week in the Geneva Police Department files involved just one car. It was an unusual group that included distracted driving, collisions with animals and tickets for driving too fast for conditions. Here's the roundup: Accident on Peyton Street—The front of a Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Rachel Staples, 17, of Geneva collided with the rear of a Chevrolet Silverado parked and unattended around 6:50 p.m. Nov. 18 in the 300 block of Peyton Street about 50 feet east of North Fourth Street, reports said. More than $1,500 damage was done to any one vehicle. Reports said Staples was looking down at her radio and did not see the parked vehicle as she made a right turn onto eastbound Peyton Street. Here's a list of accidents collected from Geneva Police Department files.   Accident at Keslinger and Peck Road—The passenger side of a Ford Explorer driven by Brenda Meisinger, 56, of Geneva collided with the front of a Chevrolet Caprice driven by Matthew Drury, 20, of Geneva around 5:20 p.m. Nov. 6 at the intersection of Keslinger Road and Peck Road, reports said. Meisinger was transported to Delnor Hospital by Medic 251, and Drury refused treatment. More than $1,500 damage was done to any one person’s vehicle. Meisinger was charged with operation of an uninsured motor vehicle and has a court date of Dec. 18. She also was issued a warning notice for failure to yield turning left. Accident on Route 31—The rear of a Ford Explorer driven by Ryan Doherty, 18, of Geneva collided with the passenger’s side of a Toyota Avalon driven by Marilyn Manikas, 71, of West Chicago around 3:10 p.m. Oct. 26 in the 300 block of North First Street about 50 feet north of Ford Street, reports said. More than $1,500 damage was done to any one vehicle. Doherty was issued a warning notice for improper backing. Accident on East Fabyan Parkway—The front of an Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Ahmet Ferizi, 46, of Wheaton collided with the front of a Toyota Corolla driven by Castimiro Hernandez, 22, of West Chicago around 6:48 a.m. Oct. 29 at the intersection of East …

Alcohol Suspected as Factor in Route 31 Crash that Injured 4

Accident on Route 31, north of Wildrose Springs Drive, shut down state highway for more than three hours.

Alcohol and faulty equipment are suspected as contributing causes to a late Sunday morning accident on Route 31 that injured four people and shut down the roadway for more than three hours. St. Charles police, in a press release, said Luis Pina, of the 400 block of New York Street, Aurora, was southbound on Route 31, just north of Wildrose Springs Drive, when he lost control of his Pontiac Grand Am and went into oncoming traffic. The Grand Am collided with a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Manuel Nunez, of the 70 block of West Old Indian Trail Road, Aurora. The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. St. Charles police and fire vehicle responded to the crash, which required extrication of Pina from his vehicle. The roadway was shut …

Blackout Cited as Reason for Crash With Postal Service Truck—and Other August Collisions in Geneva

The summary of collision reports in Geneva during the first half of August 2012 shows an incident in which a man said he blacked out at the wheel, as well as several other accidents with injuries and citations. Accident with Injuries on Kaneville Road—The front of a Yamaha V-Star driven by Duane Wickstrom, 61, of Geneva collided with the rear of a Frumman Postal Service vehicle driven by Scott DeFoy, 51, of Batavia around 3:34 p.m. Aug. 2 in the 1600 block of Kaneville Road about 200 feet east of Burgess Road, Geneva police reports said. Wickstrom was taken to Delnor Hospital. Wickstrom told police he blacked out for a moment, and when he came to, he was too close to the Postal Service vehicle to stop. Sometimes the accident reports pile up faster than a multi-vehicle accident. In a two-part series, Geneva Patch catches up with the events collected in July from the Geneva police blotter. Two interesting items in the bunch include the first ticket I've seen to a teen driver who had more than one person under 18 in the car and a single-car accident in which a blown tire is blamed. Truck Hits Awning—A GMC truck driven by Michael Dixon, 42, of Geneva hit the awning of Duke & Lee’s, 609 Batavia Ave., around 4:32 p.m. June 26, reports said. Between $501 and $1,500 damage ws done. A majority of Geneva traffic reports end in no citation or a warning ticket, but there were two cases in this week's blotter collection that resulted in a court date. Accident on Bricher Road—A Toyota Camry driven by Timothy Lantz, 22, of Crestwood collided with the rear of a Hyundai Azera driven by Geraldine Orlando, 69, of Aurora around 4:40 p.m. June 4 in the 2500 block of Bricher Road about 20 feet west of North Randall Road, reports said. Between $501 and $1,500 was done ot any one vehicle. Lantz was ticketed for driving with a license or permit and has a court date of July 10. Accident on South Peck Road—The front of a BMW 328Xi driven by Jordan Matzen-Campise, 18, of Geneva collided with the rear of a Buick Lucerne driven by Jerome Jedynak, 59, of St. Charles around 4:15 p.m. May 31 in the 200 block of South Peck Road about 200 feet north of Keslinger Road, Geneva police reports said. Both drivers refused medical treatment, but Matzen-Campise’s BMW required a tow. More than $1,500 damage was done to any one vehicle. Catching up with crash reports for the past three weeksm we see drivers ranging in age from 17 to 83, vehicles from a Volkswagen Jetta to a Chevrolet S-10, locations from East State Street to Randall Road. Accident on West State Street—The rear of a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Felipe Moreno, 49, of Cortland, IL, collided with the front of a Chevrolet S-10 driven by David Nelson, 80, of Geneva around 3 p.m. May 10 in the 800 block of West State Street about 30 east of Anderson Boulevard, reports said. Between $501 and $1,500 damage was done to any one person’s vehicle. Moreno was issued a warning ticket for improper lane usage.
