Former 2nd Ward Alderman William Barclay says he is considering a run for either the Geneva mayoral position or the 2nd Ward aldermanic seat.
Former 2nd Ward Alderman Bill Barclay said Wednesday that concerns about city spending and a desire to return to public service are two reasons he's considering a run for mayor or a return to the City Council. "There are ways that we can reasonably trim spending, but we're not looking," he said in a telephone interview. "At this time, with the economy where it is, we all need to tighten our belts." Barclay said he's also concerned about the conversation at City Council meetings, which he said needs more focus on important issues. "We argue about $5,000 for park benches, but we ignore the big things," he said. "The city spent $500,000 on a new computer system for its efficiencies, and then won't talk about eliminating positions." Barclay …
It's already getting way too complicated, folks. Please have your scorecards ready!
I know y’all just love to go into conniptions whenever I tell a starry eyed young City Council hopeful like Zac Ploppert to keep his powder dry, but the truth is, running for office, even one as nondescript as alderman, isn’t merely a matter of getting your name on the ballot. There’s a heck of a lot more to it. Yes! I get that we’re genetically predisposed to root for the underdog, and we desperately want to believe the system is fair and balanced, but it isn’t. Assuming Kevin is the only candidate or that he does win the mayoral race, Geneva may find itself in the proverbial space between a rock and a hard place if Chris Lauzen becomes the county chair. It's obvious that there's no love lost between these two and getting them to work together may be impossible. I would like both Chris and Kevin to publicly state that they are going to set aside their …   more ›
Playing reporter every now and then keeps me on my toes!
Considering the confluence of Swedish Days and the fact that Rick can’t seem to come up with a cheap way of cloning himself, I thought I’d take some journalistic heat off him by delving into a couple of stories and playing reporter for a day. Not to worry! We’ll get back to hard-hitting opinion pieces, like whether any festival goer should even be allowed to utter the words “fried Twinkie,” much less eat one. So, our first topic is the status of the ongoing arson investigation involving the 8:48 p.m. June 16 fire at the west campus of the First Baptist Church at Peck and Keslinger roads. Thankfully, the fire was limited to the dumpsters and caused just $5,000 in damage overall, mostly to the wooden garbage area enclosure and the scorched …

Jake, Yep! There was only .06 inches of rain (I have an electronic rain gauge), but there was plenty of of lightning so that was everyone's first though. Jeff   more ›

Terry, I absolutely agree, but the folks who need to speak up are the aldermen. They're the ones who let the mayor get away with the kind of behavior you just described. Jeff   more ›
