Kane County Reports 11th West Nile Case This Year

This is the highest number of cases since 2007. Here's the latest update from the County Health Department.

The Kane County Health Department on Wednesday reported another human case of West Nile Virus, bringing the total so far this season to 11. A 50-year-old man from South Elgin who contracted the virus was hospitalized and has since been discharged. This is the most West Nile cases Kane County has had since 2007. The State Health Department has recorded 211 cases statewide this year, including nine deaths. Last year there were 34 cases and three deaths. West Nile Case Brings Kane County Total to 10

One of the cases, the 64-year-old man from Elgin, died in August.

The Kane County Health Department is reporting today one case of West Nile Virus, bringing the total this season to 10. The case being reported today (Oct. 10, 2012) is an 85-year-old Elgin man, who was hospitalized and has since been discharged. The Health Department will be reporting new cases once a week on Wednesdays until the end of the West Nile season, which ends with the first hard frost. West Nile Hits Kane County Man, Who Becomes 3rd Local Case

West Nile starts to get serious again.

A 70-year-old man from Kane County has been confirmed as having West Nile Virus, the county's Health Department recently confirmed. The man, an Aurora resident, was hospitalized and then discharged and in recovery. This is the third case reported in Kane County. The first two involved a 16-year-old Batavia girl, and a 64-year-old Elgin man who died last month. This summer has been hot and dry, the right  combination for the Culex mosquito, the species that is known to carry the virus. It is likely we will see more activity before the season is over. The Kane County Health Department reports a second case of human contact with the West Nile Virus this season.

Kane County officially has a second human case of West Nile Virus this season, the County Health Department reported on Monday. A 16-year-old Batavia girl reported feeling ill last month, but was not hospitalized and has since recovered, the Department said. This is the second case reported in Kane County. The first case was a 64-year-old Elgin man with West Nile Virus who died last month. Cases of West Nile Virus in Chicago's Suburbs

The CDC announced that this is the worst year for West Nile Virus since it started tracking in 1999. Check out how your area is faring in our interactive map of diagnosed cases in humans and mosquitoes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week that reported cases of West Nile Virus are at an all time high. “The 1,118 cases reported thus far in 2012 is the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the third week in August since West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999,” the CDC reported. While Illinois does not rank among the top five states in terms of cases, there have been 21 reported human cases of West Nile Virus in Illinois as of Aug. 21. Those cases have been clustered in the Chicago area, with 13 human cases in Cook County and one in Lake County. UPDATE: More Kane County Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile

The total is up to five positive batches of West Nile Virus collected in Kane County traps this year. Here's the latest.

Three more batches (or pools) of mosquitoes collected this week have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Kane County Health Department reported Friday, July 13. The mosquito batches were collected in Kane County Health Department traps in Aurora, Montgomery and Carpentersville. This brings the total to five positive batches this year, the second in from Carpentersville. These positive mosquito batches usually are the first indicators of West Nile activity. Mosquitos tested positive in two cities, the Kane County Health Department reports. Here's how you can protect yourself.

The mosquitoes in Kane County are carrying a nasty surprise again this year. The first mosquitoes collected in Kane County this summer have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Kane County Health Department announced Thursday. Two mosquito batches collected in Health Department traps in Elgin and Carpentersville this week have been confirmed positive for the disease. As many as 19 Illinois counties have seen either birds and/or mosquitoes test positive so far this year, according to a Kane Co. Health Department press release. Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Are in Northern Illinois

State health officials, who have been testing for these disease-carrying mosquitoes, offer safety tips.

It’s official: Mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile virus have been discovered in Northern Illinois, according to information released by the Illinois Department of Public Health. “We are starting to see West Nile virus in mosquitoes and birds, and when temperatures rise and conditions dry up, we typically see increased reports of West Nile virus,” said Dr. Damon T. Arnold, IDPH director. Testing began May 1. Health Department staff collected the positive mosquito samples on June 28; one in Evergreen Park and the other in Oswego. The first disease-carrying mosquitoes this year were collected June 10 in Tazewell County, and the first Wes-Nile-virus-positive birds were collected June 8 in LaSalle County.
