You'll have to wait if you are used to filing your annual tax return at the earliest possible date. The Internal Revenue Service has revised its opening date for tax season — pushing it back eight days to Jan. 30, 2013. The tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15, 2013. The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on Jan. 30, 2013. Most taxpayers should be able to file on that date, though some revised forms may not be immediately available. You can blame the delay on the federal "fiscal cliff" crisis and the new tax bill Congress passed just after Dec. 31. You can find more information in this Forbes article. Last-minute filers can get tax tips via Twitter.
Guess what, Geneva? Taxpayers have two additional days this year to file. Hooray! The regular April 15 deadline falls on a Sunday, so that's not happening. Monday, April 16 is a holiday in the District of Columbia, so the deadline is Tuesday, April 17. Now in the final stretch of the 2012 tax filing season, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that they can get last-minute tips by following the IRS on Twitter. We don't need to remind you of April 15 for tax season, but there's also that early bird deadline for the city garage sale. Let us know of other deadlines this week or next!
Obviously, the tax deadline every year is April 15, right? Well, yes and no. This season, the deadline for postmarking or e-filing your federal tax return is actually April 17, believe it or not. That's because April 15 falls on a Sunday this year, and April 16, 2012, falls on Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia. Here's a link to the IRS e-filing website.
