Come to Geneva's Tom & Eddie's from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, to sample "The Pineapple Express" and other Geneva High School marketing class burger creations.
The task is simple: create an edible, easily marketable burger for a local establishment to sell to perspective customers. The students of Eric Hatczel's Marketing I class have been given this task to better understand the inner workings of how businesses get their products sold and popularized in a community. "The goal is to really just challenge us as marketing students," said senior Kristen Schrotenboer, 17, "The project tries to get us to think and be creative on how marketing works. Its true purpose is to make us think out of the box and find ways to succeed and be better than our competition." The project tries to capture the fundamental task of a business: to create an original product and make a profit from said project. It's a …

Geneva Community High School partners with Jamba Juice and Sodexo to give kids healthier choices in the cafeteria, but students say many of the healthy food items aren't very appetizing.
This week, Geneva High School started to sell Jamba Juice smoothies in its cafeteria, the latest option in the Sodexo food service's "Be Healthy, Live Healthy" program, aimed at getting more students to make healthier choices when going through the lunch line. Many students, however, don't believe that these new choices will have any sort of major impact—in part because the fruits and vegetables they've seen aren't fresh. "I think it is nice to have the option to have healthy food in the cafeteria," said senior Dana Hayes, 17, "but personally if the products aren't fresh, I just steer clear of them. I always go for the grapes, but a lot of the healthier stuff is older than or not as fresh as I would've hoped. I think if the options were …

From packing your child’s lunch to stocking a college dorm, good nutrition is essential for students of all ages.
Geneva resident and dietician Mary Zupke (MS, RD, LDN) shares her best advice, and even a few of her scrumptious recipes, so we can all make this new school year healthy, delicious and fun! Eating well can be difficult once the hectic schedules of the school set in. From extracurricular activities to athletics and homework, finding the time to eat well may seem impossible. “It is important for kids to get healthy meals and snacks every day to ensure that they are getting the protein, minerals and vitamins needed for energy, brain function, physical growth, and overall health,” Zupke said. And surprisingly, with just a little planning ahead, good nutrition is simple and easy to achieve. OK, so maybe eating right is not as simple as just …
A proposed update to a District 304 policy on teacher-student e-mails and cell phone calls would add social media sites to restricted communications channels.
A proposed revision to School District 304’s policy on staff and student use of electronic communications would formally prohibit teachers from contacting students through social media sites. “We want our staff to use district-approved communication avenues when communicating with students,” said Assistant Superintendent Craig Collins at Monday’s Policy Committee meeting. “We do not want teachers and students to communicate through personal cell phones, e-mail addresses or websites.” While the Board of Education approved a ban on teachers using personal e-mail accounts or cell phones to contact students in 2006, that policy needs to be updated and expanded to include social media sites, Collins said. “A lot has changed since 2006,” he …
A proposed revision of the cell phone ban would let students talk and text at lunch and between classes, but not during class or study halls.
Students in School District 304 could be talking and texting on their cell phones in school this fall. District officials discussed lifting the outright ban on cell phone use in schools Monday at a Policy Committee meeting. “We’ve been asking, ‘Will we get better compliance (on not using cell phones in class) if we allow students to use cell phones between classes?” said Assistant Superintendent Craig Collins. The district’s current policy bans the use of cell phones by students on school property during the school day, but many students routinely ignore the ban, especially at Geneva High School, Collins said. “It’s a challenge to monitor,” he said. “The kids get really good at whipping the phones out and doing what they have to do in the…
