Not All Cared for Scarecrow Fest Changes

From a newcomers perspective, the festival seemed to go off without a hitch, but some say move all the scarecrows back to Lincoln Park.

The crowds were beginning to thin as the shadows grew longer in downtown St. Charles on Sunday evening. Along 1st Street, the "Stuff Your Own Scarecrow" area had closed earlier, and now many of the booths were, like fall’s leaves, starting to come down. Unlike the leaves, however, most will be gone by the time residents begin their Monday morning strolls or jogs along the riverwalk. Just south of Main on 1st Street, and just north of Main on Route 31, Columbus Day likely will dawn with carnival workers intent on packing up and putting away their rides and games and preparing them to move on to the next festival, the next job. This was the festival’s 27th year and represented a large change. No doubt the Greater St. Charles Convention and …

The intermixing of scarecrows and commercial displays was a bust and the spreading out of the scarecrows made for a lot of unhappy people. This poorly executed approach dramatically lowered the impact of the scarecrow displays which are the foundation of the event. There are ways the scarecrows could have been concentrated without the crowding effect. But as it was done this idea confused and …   more ›

FOOTBALL FINAL: Big Stop, Big Plays Carry St. Charles North Over Geneva

An early goal-line stand and some big plays in key moments help North Stars to 25-6 win over the Vikings.

A goal-line stand by St. Charles North on Geneva's first drive might have been the momentum changer in a big homefield win Friday night for the North Stars. On the first series, the Vikings marched 80 yards on 11 plays—almost exclusively on the hard running of Bobby Hess—to the North Stars' 1-yard line. But when Geneva tried to punch it in, they were blocked, shackled, muzzled, beaten. Four times. By a wall of North Star blue. How big was that goal-line stand to start the game? "It was gigantic," North Stars coach Mark Gould said. "I mean, here’s two teams, we had some confidence after our first wins last week, and we’re trying to carry over into this week. If they come down there and score right away, they’ve got some great momentum, they…

No good Robism’s this week? Here are some older ones: Wicinski simply turned to his defensive backfield and found some Viking 'Mojo.' That cancer don’t play nice. I got serious green on this team. I’m going to taste this one a little bit. Sinatra is alive and well.   more ›

SOPH FOOTBALL: Vikings Hold Off North Stars in the Rain, 19-7

Geneva wins the battle of the swamp at St. Charles North.

The sophomore Vikings and North Stars went toe to toe in the rain Friday night, battling in a close game until Geneva pulled away with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter for a 19-7 win. Geneva took first blood with 54 seconds left in the first quarter on a sustained drive and a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Liam Burns. The North Stars came back in the second quarter, scoring on a 3-yard run by Chris Paige to take a 7-6 lead with 4:34 on the clock. But Geneva score two minutes later on an interception return by Alex Lobrillo for a 13-7 lead at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, in which both offenses struggled to gain momentum in the rain, the Vikings scored with 5:51 showing on an 8-yard pass from Mike Landi and credited to Max …

Chicago Magazine Says Fox Valley Marathon Is Best

August edition reports the Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, which begins in St. Charles on Sept. 16, is better than the Chicago Marathon.

Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, which kicks off Sept. 16 in St. Charles, is the best among those listed in Chicago Magazine’s August edition, which includes the Chicago Marathon, according to a release issued by Monday by Fox Valley Marathon. The magazine’s editors voted the Fox Valley Marathon over the Chicago event in part due to its Weather Flex option. Weather Flex allows runners to choose to switch between a full or half marathon, depending on race-day weather conditions, the release states. “We’re extremely honored,” Dave Sheble, co-race director, said in the release. “Our goal when we started the Fox Valley Marathon in 2010 was to provide runners a quality environment to compete in the Chicagoland suburbs. We wanted the big-…
