Don DeWitte’s 20 years of service on the St. Charles City Council draws to an end tonight.
Leadership comes at a price, often in the form of detractors, but Don DeWitte takes in stride the criticism he’s received over the years for his support of sometimes controversial proposals. In recent years, he’s been targeted for his support of the nearly complete Red Gate Bridge, for casting the deciding vote on the Lexington Club proposal, and for backing a proposal to add a housing element to the Corporate Reserve project, a plan that was rejected by the City Council. He makes no apologies and exudes confidence that each project is important to the future of St. Charles. Construction along the East Main Street/Route 64 corridor is gearing up to get into full swing during a week in which construction crews have closed lanes and redirected others in preparation for the final season of the $49 million reconstruction project. St. Charles Public Works Engineering Manager James Bernahl, in an email to residents and businesses on Thursday, said this week’s work largely has involved getting crews and equipment back to the construction site in preparation for the work that lies ahead. Cold weather, overcast skies and an occassionally brisk wind did not stop thousands of people from taking to Main Street in downtown St. Charles on Saturday for the annual St. Patrick’s Parade, a celebration of all thinks Irish. Enjoy the photos from Saturday’s parade!
The St. Charles Liquor Commission comes down on the Alibi for third violation since May 2012. The Beehive also is fined.
The city of St. Charles on Monday laid down a $2,000 fine and $500 in costs against two downtown bars, one of which also will have its liquor license suspended for three days later this month. Mayor Donald DeWitte, the city’s liquor commissioner, announced the penalties during a St. Charles Liquor Commission meeting to review the complaints again the Alibi Bar & Grill, 12 N. 3rd St., and The Beehive Tavern & Grille, 204 W. Main St. The Alibi, which was awarded its Class B-3 liquor license nearly 13 months ago, will have it’s license suspended for three days — from 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, through 2 a.m. Saturday, March 23. The Downtown St. Charles Partnership announced Tuesday that it has extended the entry deadline to Thursday, Feb. 28, due to increasing interest in the St. Patrick’s Parade, which steps off at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, on Main Street, from 6th Street to 4th Avenue. St. Patrick's Day itself is on March 17, of course, so the party can run for two straight weekend days. For Geneva residents, of course, the St. Charles parade is the largest and closest St. Patrick's celebration in the area. Reports: Recently captured fugitive Daniel R. Kellogg appears in Kane County courtroom.
The area man who in 2011 reportedly fled to Turkey to avoid imprisonment on fraud and theft charges related to the theft of a home he rented in Campton Hills appears ready to make a deal with prosecutors, the Kane County Chronicle reports. Daniel R. Kellogg, 38, who was arrested in St. Charles on Jan. 19, appeared in Judge John Barsanti’s court on Thursday and said he wants to make a deal, according to the Chronicle, which also reported that Kellogg told the judge he wanted to represent himself. Barsanti talked him out of it, and appointed a public defender to represent Kellogg. Campton Hills police were assisted by St. Charles police and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 19 in arresting Kellogg, 38, after authorities received a tip…
