It's Police Week in the United States; in that spirit, we asked our local readers in Geneva, St. Charles and Batavia what they appreciate most about their local force.
Did you know that this week—May 13-20—is officially Police Week in the United States? According to PoliceWeek.org: In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. In the spirit of the week, we reached out to our St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia Patch readers on Facebook and asked what they appreciate most about the various Tri-Cities police departments. Eating organic is good for your health and it's good for the planet. But sometimes, it can be hard to find. Here's where to get the best organic foods in and around Batavia, Genevsa and St. Charles.
Did you know that eating conventional produce increases your risk of pesticide contamination by 30 percent? And chowing down on non-organic chicken and pork increases your risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria by 33 percent? This is all according to a 2012 Annals of Internal Medicine report. If you're not already sold on the benefits of eating organic, consider this: organic foods may have more nutrients than their conventionally produced counterparts. Organic broccoli, for example, has higher levels of antioxidants and vitamin C than the traditionally produced variety, found a 2012 Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture study. There’s also evidence of more heart-healthy omega-3s in organic poultry and dairy. So eating …

Construction crew cracked a 6-inch, high-pressure natural gas main, prompting the closure and the evacuation of several businesses.
Monday afternoon's gas leak along the East Main Street/Route 64 reconstruction was the second caused by construction crews this month and the third since August. City officials hoped to reopen East Main Street/Route 64 by midnight Monday after a construction crew struck a 6-inch, high-pressure natural gas main during midafternoon, forcing the thoroughfare’s closure between 9th and 13th avenues and prompting the evacuation of several businesses. St. Charles Fire Department interim Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said late Monday that the incident was reported at 2:28 p.m. Firefighters remained at the scene late into the evening, using monitoring equipment to take readings of natural gas levels to ensure the perimeter was wide enough while the …
Kane County won’t issue liquor license sought by prospective buyers of Blackjacks Gentlemen’s Club.
The only strip joint in Kane County could close after county officials narrowly voted down a liquor license request by the two people who are considering buying it, the Daily Herald reports. According to the Daily Herald account, Blackjacks Gentlemen’s Club on Route 25 between Elgin and St. Charles has been operating without a liquor license for about a year. The county reduced the number of its liquor licenses — specifically, the one held by Blackjacks — about a year ago, after its owners pleaded guilty in February 2012 to federal charges related to the club and an illegal Internet gambling operation. The Kane County Board on Tuesday voted 11-10 to deny a liquor license application by Debra Diaz and Seif El Sharif, operating as DD&SS Inc…
