The number of teens who use social network sites almost doubles between ages 12 and 13, according to data from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.
About 76 percent of teen Internet users are also social media users, according to a survey of about 800 teens surveyed in 2011 by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. Of those teen social media users, 93 percent have a Facebook account and the number of teens who use social network sites almost doubles between the ages of 12 and 13, according to the Pew data. Most social networking sites restricts children under 13 years old from creating an account, but it’s not uncommon for children to lie about their age when signing up. From Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter and many other social networking sites popping up on the web, Patch wants to know: At what age do you allow your children to have a social media account…
District 303 Board of Education Policy Committee recommendation echoes concerns that have prompted some states to outlaw the practice of employers asking for usernames and passwords.
The St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 Policy Committee has suggested a change that would prohibit the school district from asking job candidates for their social media usernames and passwords. The change has some interesting implications for St. Charles and other area school districts. Geneva, for example, recently had considerable flap over an administrator's access to a student's Facebook page. If administrators are held to that standard for employees, the question arises as to whether a student's privacy rights might be similarly invaded. The committee’s recommendation Monday was part of a proposed Hiring Process and Criteria policy change that also would limit when the district can conduct credit checks on prospective …

What Geneva businesses are really good at social media? Well, there are more than a few. Just looking at Facebook likes, it's easy to see that the Kane County Cougars lead the league, but there are a few surprises, perhaps. The All Chocolate Kitchen is very good at social media. It ranks second behind the Cougars in total likes on Facebook—at least as far as the Geneva businesses found in a quick search. Restaurants, taverns and wine stores do a great job getting the word out on Facebook, but others made the list of places with more than 500 likes, including The Little Traveler, Prana Yoga, Dynamic Tanning and even a church: First Baptist Church of Geneva. Do you have a Geneva business you'd like to promote on Facebook? Let us you in the …

But am I counting the days in anticipation or just marking time until my eventual demise?
When I first entered the workforce, back in ye olde 1980s, the Interwebs did not exist. There was no Facebook or Twitter, no online shopping or eBay, no TMZ or People.com. I’m not sure that we screwed around any less at work than people do today, so I won’t go off into one of those “in my day…” rants. We were just limited to killing time with actual, rather than virtual, people and activities. If I wanted to gossip about people behind their backs, I had to do it with co-workers. Or call my friends who were also in dead-end entry level jobs. You just had to keep your eye on the opening-to-your-cubicle-which-cannot-really-be-called-a-door in case the boss happened by so you could bust out some officious-sounding convo, which was the '80s …

When I was a kid, I used to go to a lot of those backyard carnivals to benefit Jerry’s Kids. Do they still have those? I think you used to request a kit from the Muscular Dystrophy Association and they’d send you a booklet of ideas, some posters, a Tilt-A-Whirl, two bearded ladies, and a syphilitic roustabout. I never hosted one myself so I could be wrong on some of that. Anyway, I remember one in particular that had a fortune teller’s tent. I went in and a little girl in a genie costume read me a prefab fortune off of a sheet of paper. Upon leaving the tent, I proceeded to mercilessly mock and make fun of the whole thing—what a joke, who cares, nice outfit, stupid fortune, etc... My friends and I got a big yuck out of it, and then I went…

I too was unfamilar with the term "snarky". Trip to Merriam Webster revealed the #1 definition as "crotchety, snappish" (many would say defines a sr. citizen). #2 definition "sarcastic, impertinent or irreverent in tone or manner". Seems to me the order should be reversed. Synonyms are certainly not positive either   more ›
