Help Make a BIG Difference for Geneva's Small Businesses

Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to support local businesses in your community, and Geneva is just the place to do it.

On Nov. 24, shop at your favorite local stores and help fuel the economy. With a downtown voted Best Downtown Shopping District in Kane County and Best Downtown Atmosphere in two different reader polls this year; along with over 150 specialty shops offering clothing, home décor, jewelry, antiques and more, all within walking distance, why wouldn't you shop local on Nov. 24?  Still need some convincing? Here are the top five reasons to support locally owned businesses. 1. Buying local creates jobs Half of all employees in the U.S. work for small business. Furthermore, small businesses create 60 percent of all new jobs.  Buy local, create a job. 2. Shop in Geneva on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Geneva. "Studies show that for every $100 spent in a locally owned independent store, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures," said Laura Rush of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. In that case no wonder y the stores stay open in Geneva is full of white rich yuppies. For example when most people see a black person in Geneva they think there going to get mugged or they cross the street assuming that all black people are from the hood with weapons and are trying to kill or mug you. When people in GENEVA they just assume that yard work or some low end job needs to be done …   more ›

Jeff Ward: Downtown Geneva Needs a Bigger Slice of That $11.4 Billion Black Friday Pie

I finally succumbed to the lure of Black Friday, but it took Tom Petty to get me out the door!

It’s true! Despite my previous assertions which included a bold statement that it would never happen to me, I finally succumbed to the lure of Black Friday, or, as it’s better known at Kiss The Sky and every other independent record store, “Black Vinyl Friday.” Yes! It took an exclusive Tom Petty live album, some unreleased Wilco songs, a 1972 live Grateful Dead triple LP, and a Kings of Leon box set complete with new material to get me out of the house on what might be the most contrived day since they invented New Year's Eve. But let me make one thing perfectly clear. I wasn’t exactly standing out in the cold, waiting in a long line to get into some Randall Road big box store at 2 in the morning while perfecting my pepper-spray …

Jeff, It's taken you a lot of years to finally break down and finally venture out into the Black Friday morass. I'm still holding out and don't see myself camping out in front of any big box store hoping to get a deal on appliances. Just like you won't find me in line in front of an Apple store waiting for the first iWhatever device. Black Friday is now starting on Thanksgiving Day, which means …   more ›

The Coffee Drop Shop is one of my favorite places to shop in Geneva. They have a wonderful selection of loose and bagged teas, tea pots and accessories, and a lot of coffee stuff as well. The owner is welcoming, helpful and laid back, making her store a pleasure to visit. Susan Krass   more ›
