Readers' Choice 2012: Who's Your Favorite Dry Cleaner?

Hey, Patch readers! Where do you go in Batavia, Geneva or St. Charles for your dry-cleaning? Let us know, and vote for your favorite in our Readers' Choice contest.

Looking clean and fresh is never a bad idea, and many of us rely on dry cleaners to put our best foot forward.  And not just for work shirts or that awesome LBD—little black dress—a great dry cleaner should be an expert in everything sartorial, from special fabrics to stubborn stains. And better still, offer top-notch tailoring services on the side. So Patch asks: Who is the dry cleaner you use/trust the most? Where's the best place in town to get a zipper replaced? Is there a special option—French-style, eco-friendly—that you swear by? Winners in all Readers' Choice categories will be announced on Aug. 24. The poll will open to accept votes from registered Patch users starting on July 23 and close at 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 17. So vote for …

Readers' Choice 2012: What's the Best Men's Clothing Store in the Tri-Cities?

If you're looking for haute couture—or just some blue jeans for Father's Day—where do you go in Batavia, Geneva or St. Charles? Nominate your favorite men's clothing store for our Readers' Choice 2012 Award!

This Readers' Choice 2012 nomination is primarily targeted to men, but we know more than a few wives, mothers and daughters who have an opinion on this one, because somebody needs to shop for that poor sap who lost his way when he outgrew Garanamals. For a guy, a good men's clothing store is one of a life's great finds—because a good men's clothing store has the rare capacity to actually make you look good. Or at least better. And every man should have a go-to store, where you can trust the staff enough to match the shirt, the tie and the trousers—and match the right shirt, tie and trousers with your taste and budget. Where is that place, for you, in Geneva, St. Charles or Batavia? Let us know in the comments field of this story, where you…

Vote for the Best Antiques Store in the Tri-Cities! What's Your Readers' Choice?

Of the many antiques stores in the Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles, which one is the best? Vote for your favorite in our 2012 Readers' Choice Awards poll!

One of the simple language lessons I learned early in my journalism career was taught by Renee Tomell at The Geneva Republican, and I remember it to this day. It's "antiques store," not "antique store," because an antique store is, well, a store that's very old. And the reason we had to learn the proper use of those two words is that we typed them a lot. Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles are blessed with numerous antiques stores, and what Patch is asking you to do today is answer this question: Which one is the best? Since I've broken down and started writing this in the first person, I might as well add that I'll be more than a little interested in your votes. I don't generally shop for antiques, so I'll be curious to know how you rate the …

Americas Treasures is the best antique store I've ever been to and I've been going for 30+ years. Great variety, great prices, great people and an all-around great experience. They are new in town and you absolutely must check them out. You will not be disappointed.   more ›

Charlestowne Mall Renovations Still in 'Preliminary Stages' While Storefronts Empty

Charlestowne still has great plans for the future, but nothing seems to be getting off the ground just yet.

“We haven’t heard a hammer yet.” That comment from The Limited manager Sarah Suchor basically sums up the renovation status of Charlestowne Mall. While hopes remain high for the struggling shopping venue that lost several more tenants within the last few months, mall Marketing Director Jeffrey Renkert said plans are still on track.  “It’s gonna happen,” Renkert said. “These things take a lot of time. Permits still have not been issued. That means they’re still planning and in preliminary stages.” Renkert is referring to the ice skating rink and sushi buffet, both of which were announced last fall and were scheduled to open this spring. “An ice rink isn’t just a mom and pop store that’s gonna open in an empty space,” he said.  Follow St. …

Jeff Ward: Downtown Geneva Needs a Bigger Slice of That $11.4 Billion Black Friday Pie

I finally succumbed to the lure of Black Friday, but it took Tom Petty to get me out the door!

It’s true! Despite my previous assertions which included a bold statement that it would never happen to me, I finally succumbed to the lure of Black Friday, or, as it’s better known at Kiss The Sky and every other independent record store, “Black Vinyl Friday.” Yes! It took an exclusive Tom Petty live album, some unreleased Wilco songs, a 1972 live Grateful Dead triple LP, and a Kings of Leon box set complete with new material to get me out of the house on what might be the most contrived day since they invented New Year's Eve. But let me make one thing perfectly clear. I wasn’t exactly standing out in the cold, waiting in a long line to get into some Randall Road big box store at 2 in the morning while perfecting my pepper-spray …

Jeff, It's taken you a lot of years to finally break down and finally venture out into the Black Friday morass. I'm still holding out and don't see myself camping out in front of any big box store hoping to get a deal on appliances. Just like you won't find me in line in front of an Apple store waiting for the first iWhatever device. Black Friday is now starting on Thanksgiving Day, which means …   more ›
