Mike Bruno To Officially Announce 1st Ward Candidacy

On Wednesday, Historic Preservation Commission member Mike Bruno will officially announce his candidacy for the 1st Ward aldermanic seat.

In a Monday press release, Mike Bruno said he will formally announce Wednesday his intent to run for 1st Ward alderman. Bruno will make the announcement at 3 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 15, on the front porch of his home, at 522 Fulton St. in Geneva. Bruno will make a brief statement of the reasons for his candidacy and will answers questions from the press thereafter. Refreshments will be served. Bruno has been a member of Geneva’s Historic Preservation Commission. He is an active and vocal proponent of historic preservation on issues such as the proposed demolition of the former Pure Oil Building, and the Cetron Building. Bruno owns a local Geneva technology company called 1st Layers Consulting and has been a regular volunteer on Geneva events …

QuickStory: Sam Hill Won't Run for 1st Ward; Mike Olesen Will

First Ward Alderman Sam Hill argues to change the rules that prohibit citizens who hold liquor licenses from serving on the council, and the Committee of the Whole supports him in an 8-2 straw poll vote, opening the door for Stockholm's owner Mike Olesen.

First Ward Alderman Sam Hill dropped the bombshell Monday that he would not be seeking re-election as 1st Ward alderman, a position he's held for almost 12 years. And he did so in the wake of a City Council Committee of the Whole straw poll that opens the door to allow liquor-license holders to run for office—and Stockholm's owner Mike Olesen to throw his hat in the ring. "I do intend to run, yes," Olesen said after the Committee of the Whole ended at about 10:20 p.m. Monday night. On a Church Fire and an Aldermanic Race

Playing reporter every now and then keeps me on my toes!

Considering the confluence of Swedish Days and the fact that Rick can’t seem to come up with a cheap way of cloning himself, I thought I’d take some journalistic heat off him by delving into a couple of stories and playing reporter for a day. Not to worry! We’ll get back to hard-hitting opinion pieces, like whether any festival goer should even be allowed to utter the words “fried Twinkie,” much less eat one. So, our first topic is the status of the ongoing arson investigation involving the 8:48 p.m. June 16 fire at the west campus of the First Baptist Church at Peck and Keslinger roads. Thankfully, the fire was limited to the dumpsters and caused just $5,000 in damage overall, mostly to the wooden garbage area enclosure and the scorched …
