National Report: Click here for an interactive map that will show you the deficient bridges in our area as well as the status of the bridges we cross every day.
Sixteen bridges within 10 miles of Geneva are rated "structurally deficient," according to a Transportation for America report. The good news is that none of them are in Geneva, Batavia or St. Charles city limits and none are major traffic thoroughfares across the Fox River. The bad news is that there is a deficient bridge as close as Wenmoth Road, which crosses Mill Creek, and another at Joliet and Wilson Streets in DuPage County, a 1933-vintage bridge crossing Kress Creek that handles 11,500 vehicles a day. Other deficient bridges you've probably crossed several times include Main Street in Winfield and on Illinois Route 56. The report also indicates the relative health of bridges we cross every day in Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles. …

Hate to say it but there are trucks that drive around take free liberty of things they see anywhere close to the street. I guess if the police called them on it they would say they thought the person was throwing the goods out or giving them away. Too bad no one lays down ground rules. Just don't leave anything near the street these days unless you intend to give the item away.   more ›

West Chicago police say that within the past week they have seen an increase in the number of vehicle burglaries, primarily overnight in the downtown residential areas between Washington Street and National Street, as well as Arbor Avenue and Route 59. The Health Department’s Community Health Improvement Plan targets chronic diseases such as cancer. The department recommends that all homes in Kane County be tested for radon.
As part of National Radon Action Month during January, the Kane County Health Department wants parents of children in day care to know they will be better informed about levels of radon in their child’s facility under a new state law that took effect Jan. 1, 2013. Licensed day care centers and day care homes in Illinois are now required to test for the radioactive gas. One steals a license sticker and goes to jail. Another has illegal drugs and runs 111 mph in a 45 zone and does not go to jail. Who is more dangerous and should end up doing time? Heaven forbid anyone should mess with the State's book keeping and revenue generating even in an infinitesimal way, but if you threaten the lives of others on the highway, it's no big deal?   more ›
