President Barack Obama underscores the importance of investing in scientific research during a speech on American energy at Argonne National Laboratory on Friday.
President Bartack Obama was speaking at Argonne National Laboratory on Friday, and for the most part, he was speaking about Argonne National Laboratory, as well. But it doesn't take much reading between the lines to see that, as Argonne goes, so goes Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia. Obama visited Argonne, located just outside of Lemont, to promote his proposed Energy Security Trust, which would set aside $2 billion over 10 years to research alternatives for oil and gasoline. While pledging his commitment to scientific research, Obama also acknowledged the looming budget cuts facing federal facilities like Fermilab as a result of the sequester. "One of the reasons I was opposed to these cuts is because they don’t …

National Report: Click here for an interactive map that will show you the deficient bridges in our area as well as the status of the bridges we cross every day.
Sixteen bridges within 10 miles of Geneva are rated "structurally deficient," according to a Transportation for America report. The good news is that none of them are in Geneva, Batavia or St. Charles city limits and none are major traffic thoroughfares across the Fox River. The bad news is that there is a deficient bridge as close as Wenmoth Road, which crosses Mill Creek, and another at Joliet and Wilson Streets in DuPage County, a 1933-vintage bridge crossing Kress Creek that handles 11,500 vehicles a day. Other deficient bridges you've probably crossed several times include Main Street in Winfield and on Illinois Route 56. The report also indicates the relative health of bridges we cross every day in Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles. …

Rep. Randy Hultgren said president's economic policies are bad for the country. Compares his policies with fiscal state of Illinois.
U.S. Congressman Randy Hultgren said people only need to look at the fiscal state of Illinois to see where the fiscal policies of President Barack Obama will lead the country. “The bottom line is we have seen in Illinois exactly what the outcome of the Obama era policies are. We’ve seen first-hand as the state has increased taxes, increased spending ... and lost jobs. The state continues to come apart at the seams. That’s what will happen at the federal level, too, as a result of the president’s policies. We know this. We’ve seen it before firsthand in our state. And if you keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to keep getting what you’ve already got,” Hultgren said in a press release. During his annual State of the Union address to …

Reports: President Obama might be ready to make an announcement.
The Los Angeles Times and many other sources are reporting Monday that a deal is emerging in the Senate that could result in a short-term solution to the year-end “fiscal cliff.” In broad strokes, it looks like taxes would be raised on folks making $450,000 or more a year. Vice President Joe Biden stepped into the picture and has an agreement allegedly with Republican Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell that could pass Congress in the hours remaining before a midnight deadline. What do you think? Is it better to go off the cliff or make a deal? Is this proposal right for America and folks who live here in Geneva?

The Department of Central Management Services has received notice from President Barack Obama that all persons or entities covered by the Illinois Flag Display Act are to fly the flags at half-staff immediately until Sunset, Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012. The flag order honors the victims of the attack in Benghazi, Libya. According to a report in HuffPost World, the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other American diplomats might have been planned—linked to the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks carried out by al Qaeda in Washington and New York. Earlier today, U.S. Congressman Randy Hultgren joined Obama and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney in condemning the Tuesday attacks.

West Chicago project has a price tag of $3.5 million and is expected to take four months to complete. Longer runways will help serve corporate flights and national security operations for events like a presidential visit or the NATO summit.
The DuPage Airport is extending its second-longest runway. Construction on the $3.5 million project, which took five years to receive Federal Aviation Administration approval, began this month and is expected to take four months to complete. The runway will be extended 1343 feet and will span 6350 feet upon completion, making it capable to accommodate the largest corporate jets. David Bird, executive director of the airport located in West Chicago, just east of St. Charles, said the lengthened runway will proide the airport with further operational flexibility and added safety. "This construction project allows us to use our extended secondary runway as a backup when maintenance is being performed on the primary runway," Bird said in a …

The proposal includes tax breaks for small business and spending on such things as infrastructure and state aid.
Offering a potential counter to the stream of bad economic news, President Barack Obama proposed a $447 billion jobs plan to Congress Thursday night. The proposed American Jobs Act includes more than $250 billion in small business tax incentives, while the rest of the money would fuel infrastructure spending, unemployment insurance, state aid and neighborhood rehabilitation, according to the Huffington Post. Follow St. Charles Patch on Facebook! Obama urged Congress to pass the bill “right away.” "There should be nothing controversial about this piece of legislation," Obama told the members of Congress Thursday. "Everything in here is the kind of proposal that's been supported by both Democrats and Republicans—including many who sit here …
