The Bears are in must-win mode this week at Arizona. Can you guess the score? Closest prediction to the outcome wins a Patch T-shirt!
The Bears need to win their final two games of the season and get help from other teams losing just to make the playoffs. Who thought we'd be saying that after a 7-1 start? Fortunately, Chicago travels to Arizona this weekend. The Cardinals started 4-0 before dropping nine straight and finally winning again last week to go 5-9. Predict the score prior to Sunday's Bears game. The reader who correctly guesses the score, or comes closest to guessing the score, will get a Patch T-shirt. At the end of the season, we'll have a random drawing among the weekly winners for a larger prize. Congratulations to Joe L, who won with a six-point difference last week by saying the Packers would beat the Bears 23-17. • If you’re a Patch reader, simply …

Downers North drops a bombshell on the Class 7A state football playoffs with its 38-26 win over No. 1 seed Batavia Friday.
Batavia football's second season came to a sudden, emotional conclusion Friday night. The Bulldogs finished round one of the Class 7A football playoffs 38-26 behind Downers Grove North. The Dogs (9-1) came off a second consecutive undefeated regular season and as a reigning state semifinalist. “Our kids didn’t play flat," Batavia Head Coach Dennis Piron said after the game. "(Downers Grove North) made some plays on us because they have some skill (players on offense). I don’t feel bad at all about this football game. I feel bad for the seniors. I have nothing but praise for our kids. I don’t want them to have any regrets.” David Edward closed out previously undefeated Batavia after Brandon Salter placed Downers Grove North in an enviable …

Geneva comeback falls short, emotional season ends in playoff's first round.
On a beautiful fall day, in front of a buzzing crowd dressed in blue and white on both sides of the field, the Geneva Vikings fought, scapped and fell just short, ending the 2011 season with a 35-32 loss that was a victory in every category except the final score. "It hurts, I know, but there's more to this game than wins and losses, guys," coach Rob Wicinski told his team after the game. "We've been through some adversity, but we've come through it and had two great weeks of practice, and in the end, we learned how to have fun again. I'm proud of you." The adversity had come after the Homecoming weekend, when at least two players were cited for underage drinking. The Vikings lost the following week's game at South Elgin but came back with…

Bears 20-17 over Vikings------------ no landslide here   more ›
The Tribune says the first-round game between Geneva and No. 8 seed Lake Zurich will be one of the best first-round matchups.
It would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall when the Geneva Vikings football team got together Saturday night to watch the Illinois High School Association playoff-seedings show. Was there a massive groan or cheers when Geneva matched up with Lake Zurich in the first round of Class 7A competition? The Vikings are seeded ninth, the Bears eighth. The game is at Lake Zurich, and will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday. The campus is at 300 Church St. in Lake Zurich. Here's a map to the game. Had the IHSA flipped the seeding (Geneva eighth, Lake Zurich ninth), Geneva would have had the home field, and probably a Friday night contest, as well. If you go to the Lake Zurich football website, you'll find out just how tough a game this will …
