The Kane County Chiefs of Police Association hosts its annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Ceremony at Mooseheart in Batavia.
To serve and protect. It’s a motto that many of us take for granted, but it is one that peace officers live by, and sometimes the stakes are high. Since records started being kept in 1791, 20,000 peace officers have made the ultimate sacrifice, putting their lives on the line for the residents of the communities they serve. Nationally, 16 officers have died in the line of duty this year, including Illinois State Trooper James Sauter, 28, who died in a fiery crash on March 28, 2013. Sauter, who according to Officer Down Memorial Page had been a trooper for nearly five years, was parked on the side of Interstate 294 late at night when his vehicle was rear-ended by a semitrailer. He is survived by his wife and family. Sauter’s family members …
Associates from more than 50 Kohl’s stores from Illinois and Indiana will converge at Mooseheart at 9 a.m. on Saturday for a three-hour event.
Without any sense of hyperbole, in nearly 100 years, there truly has never been a day at Mooseheart Child City & School like what is planned for the 1,000-acre campus on Saturday, April 27. For the fourth straight year, associates of the Kohl’s department store chain are to come to Mooseheart to participate in a “Go Green” event, where they will clean and beautify the campus. But the size and financial impact of this event has grown every year — and this year figures to be the largest and most impacting yet. Associates from more than 50 Kohl’s stores from Illinois and Indiana will converge at Mooseheart at 9 a.m. on Saturday for a three-hour event. Kohl’s financially supports these efforts of what could be nearly 500 staffers. Through this…
Monday was an emotional day for the school, the Sudan-born students and their supporters as the IHSA declared the students eligible for athletics. School officials said their education was never in jeopardy.
While the overwhelming sentiment among some, regarding four South Sudanese students at Mooseheart and their ruling of ineligibility by the Illinois High School Association was “let them play” — to the young men themselves, there was another issue more central: “Can we stay?” And to that, Mooseheart Executive Director Scott Hart had a simple and emphatic response; the same response he would have given any of the other 210 boys and girls currently on-campus: Yes. Hart reiterated that statement late Monday evening when discussing the early-evening decision by the IHSA Board of Directors to reverse the ineligibility decree from IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman — and to allow Mangisto Deng, Wal Khat, Akim Nyang and Makur Puou to be …

"The students were taken advantage of by A-Hope Foundation," an IHSA official said. Here's more info.
An Illinois High School Association hearing ended Monday with a bittersweet victory for Mooseheart and its four South Sudanese students. The ISHA Board ruled that the Sudanese students could indeed play sports at Mooseheart Child City and School, overturning an initial decision that would have ended their high-school sports careers. Board members also decided to place Mooseheart on probation immediately. The school will be ineligible to participate in the 2013 IHSA Basketball playoffs pending completion of an admissions review and other conditions. "The Board having considered all the evidence, finds 1.) The investigation by Associate Executive Director Kurt Gibson to be complete and appropriate and 2.) The students were taken advantage of…

Mooseheart Child City gets a temporary restraining order following the IHSA ruling that makes four Sudanese students ineligible.
A Kane County judge has granted a temporary restraining order that will allow four South Sudanese students to play basketball for Mooseheart until an IHSA hearing on Dec. 10. Judge David Akemann said three students could play basketball for the Red Ramblers in games on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a news release from Mooseheart. The Sudanese players helped secure a 53-21 Mooseheart victory Tuesday against Westminster Christian. “I am definitely pleased with Judge Akemann’s ruling (Tuesday) with the restraining order,” Mooseheart Executive Director Scott Hart said. “It’s a small victory and we appreciate the ability to let the boys continue to play until we have a full hearing before the IHSA Board of Directors.” The Illinois High …

About 100 adults were evacuated Friday after initial reports of a possible Freon leak at Mooseheart.
About 100 adults were evacuated from a Mooseheart administrative building by 4:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, following a report of a possible Freon leak, Mooseheart officials said. The evacuation was from the Moose International headquarters building, the easternmost building on the campus of Mooseheart Child City & School. Officials at 5:30 p.m. actually discovered a minor refrigeration leak, a Tri-Com command report said. Batavia Battalion Chief Ed Jancauskas confirmed the minor leak and said that a mechanical engineer was at the scene late Friday afternoon looking at the building's system. "There was ... nothing obvious that was leaking," Jancauskas said. "It could have just been something small that set the alarm off." There was also no …

Drafts and stories at the hippest bar in town.
Have you ever stepped off the Metra train at the Downers Grove Main Street station or been strolling along downtown after date night dinner and had your curiosity piqued as you glanced up at the imposing brick building just North of the tracks with the letters LOYAL ORDER OF MOOSE pin-mounted to the façade in bold all caps? I have. True story. Stepping off the train one August evening with a neighbor back in 2004 we found ourselves with no wives to report home to (Bunco night) and so I suggested Ballydoyle and a pint of Guinness. My neighbor had another idea. “Let’s go to the Moose Lodge,” he said. “The Moose lodge?," I replied, eyebrows raised. “Are you serious? The big scary building kiddie corner from that other big scary building that …
