West Chicago Celebrates Late Mayor's Life Sunday

Family, friends, residents and more gathered on Sunday to remember Mike Kwasman. He passed away on April 17.

More than 200 people filled the West Chicago Community High School gymnasium on Sunday to honor the life of their beloved mayor Mike Kwasman. “He will not be forgotten by this community,” said Rep. Mike Fortner, West Chicago's former mayor, at Sunday’s memorial service. Kwasman, 65, passed away April 17, after he suffered a heart attack days before. He had been West Chicago’s mayor since December 2006, when he was first appointed as acting mayor. He won elections in April 2007 and 2009. Kwasman was Alderman of West Chicago’s fifth ward for six years. “Kwas didn’t need to be mayor,” said Rich Jorgensen, an Honor Flight representative. “It wasn’t for the money. Sorry to learn of West Chicago's loss. Ahhh..past mayors of W/C. Anyone recall Richard "Dick" Truitt. He was my fifth grade teacher way back when at Emerson Elementary in Wheaton and years later became quite their "colorful" mayor. How bout former W/C Mayor Rennels? Services for Mike Kwasman will be held this weekend. Here are the details.

Updated at 3:16 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 21 The Illinois Patriot Guard Riders and other groups will participate in the funeral services and celebration of the life of Mike Kwasman, Mayor of West Chicago Sunday, Apr. 22. He was a policeman, a fireman and an advocate for veterans and their needs, according to an email from the Illinois Patriot Guard. Escort staging will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the DuPage Crematorium, 951 W. Washington, West Chicago, IL. There will be a short escort from the crematorium to the location of the visitation and services at West Chicago High School, 326 Joliet Street, West Chicago.
