Geneva's Santacaterina, Williams Lead List of Area's Bowl-Bound Players

NIU boasts five Tri-Cities players, including former Vikings Michael Santacaterina and Matt Williams. Here's a list of Patch-town players as well as the line-up of bowl games that await super-fans.

The BCS bowl season has begun, and two Geneva players are on the roster of bowl-bound area players. Geneva's Michael Santacaterina is a redshirt sophomore linebacker and freshman Matt Williams a backup quarterback for No. 15 Northern Illinois, a surprise BCS team, heading to the Orange Bowl to play No. 12 Florida State on New Year's Day. Also from the Tri-Cities and now playing for NIU are offensive lineman Ryan Brown of St. Charles North, tight end Jess Striedl of St. Charles East and linebacker Bobby Winkel, a Batavia resident who played for Marmion. Record-Setting Geneva Baseball Team Seeded No. 1 in Lake Park Regional

Vikings are 25-8, the most wins in the GHS history, and are on an 8-1 roll going into regional play.

A lot of folks knew at the beginning of the season that 2012 could be a special year for Geneva High School baseball. With an 8-1 run to finish the regular season, the Vikings find themselves in elite company with a 25-7 overall record and the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Lake Park Regional. The Vikings play the winner of today's Bartlett-Streamwood contest in a matchup at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Park. The 25 wins are the most in any season in Geneva High School history. NIU-bound quarterback Matt Williams is getting his Geneva High School Athletic Hall of Fame resume in order by setting a baseball-team record with 49 RBI so far this year, topping the previous record of 44 set by catcher Chris Sepanski, according to Paul Johnson's …

Geneva's quarterback might have had his best game yet in Friday's win over Wheaton North.

Matt Williams has come a long way. On Friday night, Geneva's quarterback might have had his best game so far in a stellar high school career. He threw for 210 yards, no interceptions and one touchdown, and ran for 59 yards and another touchdown. He repeatedly made big plays and very good, split-second decisions, eluded tacklers and turned at least two possible sacks into positive yards. He's a bit of a gunslinger—a little like his coach, Rob Wicinski—but he's showing maturity along with his playmaking in what appears to be an excellent Viking offense.
