Bar Louie Gets Liquor License, Could Open in 30 Days

An "eclectic urban bar with warm surroundings" is coming soon to the Geneva Commons.

Bar Louie is coming! Or, at least it has its liquor license and could be open "within 30 to 45 days," according to Bar Louie operator John Bonkowski. Bonkowski and others attended Monday's Geneva City Council meeting, where the council voted unanimously to approve adding one Class B-3 Liquor License for a new Bar Louie location at 1602 Commons Drive. "Are we a chain?" Bonkowski responded to a question from an alderman. "We’re actually a local bar that got really big. Right now, we're at 63 locations nationwide." In the Chicago area, 15 percent of the Bar Louie businesses are franchised, Bonkowski said. He describes the bar as "a gathering spot for the local community" that serves "oversized" food portions, mostly sandwiches, and specialty …

UPDATE: 318 Coffeehouse Gets OK to Sell Wine and Beer

The Geneva City Council votes 9-1 to add a liquor license for 318 Coffeehouse.

The Geneva City Council voted 9-1 Monday to grant a special use that will allow 318 Coffeehouse to operate a "cocktail lounge." The permit will allow adults to get a glass of wine or beer, as well as coffee, at your favorite 318 address on South Third Street. Robert Untiedt, owner of 318 Coffeehouse, plans to serve wine and beer inside the existing coffeehouse as well as outside on the front patio. His desire is to keep 318 Coffeehouse competitive with other coffeehouses, which are trending toward serving wine and beer. Selling beer and wine would also allow 318 Coffeehouse to make better use of its rentable upstairs room for special events such as wine and chocolate tastings, bridal showers and baby showers, according to a summary …

Get a grip, Geneva. I, for one, will continue to frequent 318. I am confident that if the management finds this was a mistake and the "wrong" crowd starts showing up, it will revert back to BYOB. I'm not too worried about locking up my woman and children over this. There are far more important things in the world to worry about. If this keeps the business viable and local, I'll come in to toast …   more ›

Colonial Cafe Wants to Add Beer and Wine to Menu

The more than 100-year-old company is looking for a new option for customers.

For the first time in the company's 100-plus year history, Colonial Cafe & Ice Cream wants to serve alcohol at its St. Charles locations. The restaurant, known for its ice cream treats, drew a little resistance from a St. Charles City Council committee Monday night (vote was 5-3) before receiving approval on two licenses—one for each of its east- and west-side locations. The licenses still need to come before the full council for final approval. St. Charles-based Colonial already has secured a liquor license at its new Crystal Lake location, said company President Tom Anderson. Applications are pending for the restaurants in the Algonquin and Naperville. The chain has seven locations throughout the Chicago area. The type of city licenses …
