Kurt Wehrmeister, class of 1975, had a Geneva High athletic career consisting of exactly two junior-varsity baseball games with six plate appearances during his senior spring. But by that point he had already begun a career in public-address announcing for the Vikings, which, after coming back from college, he would sustain without a break for more than three decades and at which he continues on a part-time basis today—more than 37 years later. His first work behind the microphone was during the fall of his senior year in 1974, for Tuesday-night jayvee football games in the tiny pressbox at old Burgess Field south of the present high school building. That November, Activities Director Chic Williams trusted him enough to introduce just the …

Derek Swanson, class of 1986, is the second of three Geneva legends who will be inducted into the 2012 GHS Athletic Hall of Fame. During 19 consecutive winning seasons as Viking football coach, Jerry Auchstetter had had extremely fast and quick running backs. But during Auchstetter’s final two consecutive seasons, 1984 and 1985, he had both, in Swanson. During his junior football season of 1984, this 175-pound tailback electrified spectators and punished opposing defenses with 1,258 rushing yards in just nine games (Geneva went 7-2 in ’84 but was excluded from the postseason)—highlighted by a 252-yard game against Waubonsie Valley. In his senior season of 1985, Swanson bettered that performance, with 1,360 regular-season yards, and an even…

Katy Lindenmuth Green, Geneva High School class of 2002, is one of three Geneva legends who will be inducted into the 2012 GHS Athletic Hall of Fame. A two-sport star in high school who achieved All-Conference status in volleyball in the fall, Katy Lindenmuth truly excelled in the spring sport of soccer. She helped lead the Vikings to a four-season record of 81-11-7 during her 1999-2002 career, earning All-Conference designation all four springs, and All-State status for both her junior and senior seasons. In her senior season of 2002, Lindenmuth was the All-Western Sun Conference MVP, and was selected both as the Daily Herald’s Player of the Year and the Sun Newspapers’ Spring Athlete of the Year—all while also earning membership in the …
