Coroner-Elect Rob Russell Keeps Promise to Retire from Current Position

Russell retires from DuPage County Sheriff's Office. Next step is accreditation for the Kane County coroner's office.

Kane County Coroner-elect Rob Russell followed through on his first campaign promise—even before officially taking office. On Nov. 23, Russell retired as a sergeant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office to devote his full time and attention to his upcoming role as the next Kane County Coroner. When asked about his 20-year career with the Sheriff’s Office, Russell replied, “I have enjoyed my time there, and I will miss everyone. I have had the privilege of working for one of the most highly accredited law enforcement offices in the county. Doing so has prepared me well for my new role as coroner.” Russell plans to begin the accreditation process, which he says will help to professionalize the coroner’s office and restore credibility. “The…

UPDATE: Firefighter Died of Attack From Her Own Dog

Dawn Brown was home alone at the time of the attack. Here are more details.

Editor's note: This story was updated Wednesday evening to include more information about why the Browns took in the dog. A 44-year-old firefighter from western Kane County died as a result of wounds sustained from a dog attack in her home, according to police. Dawn Brown was found dead Monday inside her home, located on the 400 block of Jefferson Street in Big Rock. The Kane County Coroner completed an autopsy and determined that Brown died of attack wounds from a mastiff, one of three dogs that she and her husband own. The Browns got the mastiff about a week ago from a family member, said Lt. Pat Gengler, Kane County Sheriff's Office spokesman. The dog does not have a history of aggression. "We really don’t know what prompted the attack …

Okay. Susan get your facts straight! The dogs who killed the woman in California were Presa Canarios. Im not saying they are bad dogs but they tend to have a more aggressive temperment. Great guard/protective dog for singles, couples without children. You need to show your dominance with these dogs and display YOU ARE THE LEADER OF THE PACK! For the attack on this poor lady. It must be taken into…   more ›

Russell Takes Coroner Race, Fellow GOP Win Many County Contests

Rob Russell wins the race with 56 percent of the vote. Here are some quotes and a recap of other Kane County races.

Republican Rob Russell won a contentious race Tuesday for Kane County coroner, according to unofficial election results. With 291 precincts reporting, Russell captured about 56 percent of the total vote. His opponent, Democratic candidate Tao Martinez, came in with 43 percent. "I’m very happy, very humbled for this opportunity," Russell told Patch. "I look forward to serving the citizens of Kane County for the next four years." Martinez said the campaign, his first time running for public office, was a challenging one. He congratulated all of tonight's winners on both sides of the political spectrum. "I have no regrets in how I ran my campaign," Martinez said. "I tried to set an example. I was not your typical candidate. Everyone noticed …

Democrat Martinez Gets Conservative Endorsement in Coroner's Race

In probably the most interesting and contentious Kane County race, Democrat Tao Martinez makes a late run at Republican Robert Russell—with an endorsement from a conservative group.

In a slate of Kane County Board races, it turns out that the coroner's race is, ironically, the most lively. The Kane County Conservative Coalition—the same group that has pushed hard for Chris Lauzen's campaign for County Board chairman—is backing Democrat Tao Martinez in the coroner's race over Republican Robert Russell. A press release issued Thursday by Jon Zahm said the KCCC is endorsing a Democrat for the first time since 2002, when the group favored Pat Perez for sheriff. In the same e-mail, Zahm does disclose that his wife works as a paid political consultant for Martinez. "Most of our endorsements are of people we have been supporting for months, even years in some cases," Zahm said in the press release. "However, in one of the 20…

Here is a question. I don't want to to be contentious or anything but why does Tao Martinez have what appears to be a Sherrifs emblem on his posters? Was he trying to link himself in with the Sherrif's department?   more ›

Writer urges Kane County residents to vote for Tao Martinez in Kane County coroner's race.

To the Citizens of Kane County, The office of coroner requires a dedicated person who can make decisions in a professional and ethical manner. Even though this office is an elected position it requires a person who can make decisions without the interference of partisan politics. Kane Coroner Race: Who's Better for the Job, a Doctor or a Lawman?

The Republican nomination for Kane County coroner pits Robert Tiballi against DuPage County Sheriff's Sgt. L. Robert Russell.

Choosing between the Republican candidates for Kane County coroner is a little like choosing between CSI and Quincy. Should the coroner be an investigator or a doctor? Both candidates offer the promise that they will be better than their predecessor, Kane County Coroner Chuck West, who is has been indicted on charges of official misconduct for allowing an employee to take a TV from the Carpentersville home of a deceased man. Both candidates have administrative experience, and both say they will restore the public's trust in the office. The contrast between the candidates is their professional background and the way they view the function and purpose of the Coroner's Office. On one hand, you have Robert Tiballi, a physician with 23 years of…
