A Marblehead, MA, man and his Geneva, IL, passenger were injured after his vehicle rolled over several times in Hopkinton Thursday afternoon. Nicholas Casey, 53, of Marblehead was transported to U-Mass Medical Center with incapacitating but non-fatal injuries, according to state police. I would consider this report an invasion of privacy. Did you obtain Ms. O'Connor's permission to print this? If I was involved in an out of state accident, I wouldn't want it reported on the Geneva Patch.   more ›

Are Jenny McCarthy and Brian Urlacher Temporary Genevans?

The social media set around town says the couple is staying somewhere in the friendly confines of sleepy, enchanting Geneva, IL—at least for a few months.

By now, you're probably familiar with the rumor that one of the most famous couples on the planet is renting a place here in lovely Geneva, IL. Of course, since we value their privacy and would love for them to settle down here, we'll just keep it amongst ourselves, right? Jenny McCarthy—"Mommy warrior and cellulite killer," according to her Twitter account bio, plus actress, model, game-show host, author and soon-to-be-again Playboy centerfold subject—announced to the world on May 27 that she's dating Chicago Bear Brian Urlacher. According to numerous, unsubstantiated but very confident-sounding comments on Geneva Patch's Facebook page, Jenny and Brian are renting for three months here in Geneva. No one has said where, and if we knew, we …

Will Pure Oil Building Decision Be Final Monday Night?

The agenda for Monday's City Council meeting includes the potential for a final vote on whether to demolish the Pure Oil building.

Property owner's rights versus historic preservation. Once again, that's at issue Monday night, as the Geneva City Council revisits a decision on what to do with the Pure Oil building. The property in question is at 502-514 W. State St. Plans call for demolition of the building, which is one of the remaining examples of the Pure Oil gas-station architecture made popular in the 1920s an '30s. Plans call for a St. Charles Bank & Trust drive-through at 502 W. State St. The drive-through would attach to the building to the west owned by Joe Stanton, where the bank branch would be located. In February, the Historic Preservation Commission voted 5-1 against the demolition of the former Pure Oil building, which is presently the home of the Pure …

To your question "Will the decision be final."; most likely for its present form. With the denial of demolition by the city council last night (actually a MORE supportive 8-2 vote for saving the building), it is unlikely that Mr. Stanton will resurrect any plan that involves demolition. He is, of course, free (and encouraged) to bring other plans before the HPC.   more ›

You Rate the Restaurant: Urban Grille

"Slightly eccentric, surprisingly down to earth, but most of all, delicious."

I've eaten at Urban Grille probably a half-dozen times, and I probably could make it twice that and still wouldn't have enough opportunities to try all the items that look good on the "slightly eccentric, surprisingly down to earth" menu. Apparently, from reading the reviews, I've missed the boat completely, because I haven't (yet) tried the Artesan Burgers. I keep getting distracted by the wood-grilled flat bread pizzas (Pizza Margherita), the appetizers (Shrimp Alyx) and the Sandwich Sensations (The Prime Rib Sandwich, The Cuban and The Gaucho.) "The burgers are to die for," The Daily Herald says. "Burgers—City Style," says The Beacon-News. What do you say?   REMEMBER: To rate the restaurant, click here. You can leave a star rating and…

Seven Essays: Steve LeMaire's Legacy

Seven Essays: Thoughts about Steve LeMaire.

Steve LeMaire is one of the members of my Geneva High School graduating class of 1975. As you've seen in plenty of headlines, he's also the former Geneva streets superintendent who has been charged by a grand jury of bilking the city of more than $24,000 through purchases he made with his city of Geneva credit card. LeMaire has pleaded not guilty, and as this is written, the court case continues, with a next hearing scheduled for April 19. I didn't hang out with Steve in middle school or high school. But I knew him, and I liked him. He seemed easy-going and affable. In middle school, he was on the cusp of the popular crowd—at least, as I remember it after all these years—but he didn't seem aloof or "stuck up," in the vernacular of a …

Charlestowne Mall's Ice Rink, Sushi Bar Still on Hold

The St. Charles mall has great plans for the future, but remains at 20 percent occupancy.

“We haven’t heard a hammer yet.” That comment from The Limited manager Sarah Suchor basically sums up the renovation status of Charlestowne Mall. While hopes remain high for the struggling shopping venue that lost several more tenants within the last few months, mall Marketing Director Jeffrey Renkert said plans are still on track.  “It’s going to happen,” Renkert said. “These things take a lot of time. Permits still have not been issued. That means they’re still planning and in preliminary stages.” Renkert is referring to the ice skating rink and sushi buffet, both of which were announced last fall and were scheduled to open this spring. “An ice rink isn’t just a mom and pop store that’s going to open in an empty space,” he said. Still, …

You Rate the Restaurant: Nosh

I noshed at Nosh this week, and it was great. How do you rate the restaurant?

I love to nosh, and I love Nosh in Geneva, too. I've probably eaten there close to a half-dozen times, usually for lunch, although I've ordered from the breakfast menu a couple times. Experiences always vary, but the service has been "eggs-cellent," to borrow a word from the Nosh menu, with a wait staff that's cheerful, attentive, fun (even perky), educated about the menu and seemingly delighted with the work. If the wait staff is playful, eclectic and fun, so is the menu, with headings like "Afternoon Delight" for lunch and "Moms Can't Make This" for breakfast. Nosh has been rated "critic's pick" for Top Breakfast Spots by Chicago Magazine and gets compliments from the Chronicle's Mystery Diner. Over the past couple years, I've sampled …
