Lightning Smashes Through Roof of Batavia Home, Starts Fire on Ekman Drive

WATCH firefighters battle a house house fire caused when lightning smashed through the roof of a home shortly after noon Wednesday, May 22.

Batavia and area firefighters battled a blaze on the rooftops of a Batavia home on Ekman Drive after a lightning bolt smashed through its roof shortly after noon Wednesday, May 22. The fire is at a home at 932 Ekman Drive, just west of Ekman's intersection with Raddant Road. The home is located just north of a neighborhood park. Firefighters at the scene said the fire was believed to have been caused by a lightning strike, and that was confirmed by Richard Bandur, the witness who phoned 911. "I was sitting at the kitchen table, (and saw) a big, bright bolt of lightning—my back was actually to the park," Bandur said. A house fire at 608 State Ave. in St. Charles about 12:29 p.m. shook up the Easter Sunday for residents and neighbors on the East Side and caused an estimated $250,000 in damage. No one was injured. The St Charles Fire Department arrived at the blaze by 12:32 p.m. and found heavy smoke showing from all floors of the three-story home, according to a release from the department. “Upon entry, fire was found on all three floors,” the release states. “Due to the size of the fire, the alarm was upgraded to a first level MABAS box alarm, bringing additional assistance to the scene,” the release states. Weekend Fire Damages Home Northwest of St. Charles

Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District and seven agencies assisted in combatting house fire.

Firefighters from seven agencies on Saturday battled for more than an hour to contain a fire that caused an estimated $350,000 in damage to a rural home just northwest of St. Charles. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District. Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 5N353 Crane Road at 11:44 a.m., and arrived in eight minutes, where they found a two-story home with a well-involved fire, with heavy flames on the front and one side of the home, according to the district. VIDEO UPDATE: Fire Destroys Home Near Elburn Monday

Geneva, St. Charles and area fire departments put out a fire that engulfs a home on Springwood Lane near Elburn.

That plume of black smoke you saw on the horizon around 9 a.m. Monday morning was from a fire that engulfed a home on Springwood Lane near Elburn. Geneva, St. Charles and multiple fire departments reported to the box alarm fire. The first firefighters to respond told Tri-Com Dispatch that the second floor was "fully engulfed" and the fire quickly spread. Even 45 minutes after the fire started, flames continued to erupt from the interior of the home. A neighbor said the home was occupied by a couple and their dog, and all were able to exit the building safely. She said a candle caught fire, and when the flames reached the cedar roof, the fire spread quickly. The address was reported as 3N195 Springwood Lane, but that has yet to be confirmed…

Just so all are aware, all other articles I've read say that the occupants don't even know how it started and weren't even in the area of the home where it started. I was a bit shocked to read this and find that a NEIGHBOR "knows" how the fire started...   more ›
