Downers North drops a bombshell on the Class 7A state football playoffs with its 38-26 win over No. 1 seed Batavia Friday.
Batavia football's second season came to a sudden, emotional conclusion Friday night. The Bulldogs finished round one of the Class 7A football playoffs 38-26 behind Downers Grove North. The Dogs (9-1) came off a second consecutive undefeated regular season and as a reigning state semifinalist. “Our kids didn’t play flat," Batavia Head Coach Dennis Piron said after the game. "(Downers Grove North) made some plays on us because they have some skill (players on offense). I don’t feel bad at all about this football game. I feel bad for the seniors. The Vikings fell to the Bulldogs, but not before walking away with some 80-yard touchdown runs in another high-energy game for the history books. Santacatarina was taken out of the game with a broken collarbone.
After 100 years, the rivalry is stronger than ever. Batavia wowed their home crowd tonight with a 35-21 victory over Geneva to start conference play. Batavia had five touchdowns, two kicks and a successful two-point conversion. Junior running backs Anthony Thielk and Anthony Scaccia each had two touchdowns, in that order. Senior wide receiver Zach Strittmatter caught for a touchdown and completed the two-point conversion after Thielk touchdown #2 in the first-half of the game. Geneva fought through the field of Bulldogs at Batavia High School to eventually put points on the board from two 80 yard-plus touchdown runs. One of the runs was from senior Bobby Hess, the other from senior Luke Cella. Hess also ran in the Viking's first touchdown …
