And the most important thing to do is to make sure you and all your family members have been vaccinated against both illnesses. You probably have seen news reports about increased numbers of pertussis cases in McHenry and DuPage counties. Although the number of cases here in Kane County has been moderate this year (35 since Jan. 1…

Kane County Health Department offers advice for staying healthy.

The nurse will be passing that information along to the Health Department. For the purposes of this report, personal information will not be sent to the Health Department. This, along with information gathered from hospital emergency rooms and local testing laboratories, provides a true picture of flu …

Health officials advise taking precautions when handling raw meat.
A salmonella outbreak thought to be linked to ground turkey has sickened more than 70 people in 26 states, including Illinois. No cases are yet reported in Kane County but the Kane County Health Department issued a warning Tuesday afternoon about the suspected contamination. The alert does not name a specific product but testing throughout the country found a link between people eating ground turkey and 77 reported cases of Salmonella Heidelberg between March 21 and June 29. Seven of those cases are in Illinois. County health officials advise people to follow cooking instructions on frozen for fresh ground turkey products. A food thermometer should be used to ensure that the raw meat is cooked all the way through to at least 165 degrees. …
