Patch's Halloween Costume Contest: And the Winner of the Best Costume in Illinois Is...

The Illinois winner, who will receive $250, will now be entered to win the $5,000 grand prize in Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America contest.

You know what they say—no (goblin) guts, no glory. Congratulations to Susan Wagner, the Illinois winner of Patch’s Best Halloween Costume in America Contest. Hundreds of adults and children from across Illinois entered the contest. Parents posted costume photos of themselves and their families from this Halloween or from years past. We had lots of ghouls, ghosts, and Honey Boo Boos to choose from, but this Indiana Jones Lego couple costume won us over. As the winner of the $250 prize for the best costume in Illinois, Susan Wagner is now in the running to be the $5,000 grand prize winner of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America contest. The winner will be announced on Monday, Nov. 12.

Crain's: Genevans Spend More than $120K in Adult Halloween Costumes

A Crain's Chicago Business reports on "spooky spending" shows that adults here in Geneva enjoy dressing up for Halloween.

There's a little Halloween spirit in all of us, apparently. A Crain's Chicago Business report on "Spooky Spending" shows that Geneva residents spent more than $120,000 last year on adult Halloween costumes. Our neighbors to the north—fresh off of their annual Scarecrow Fest—spent more than $180,000 when you combine the two zip codes. Batavia adults showed the most Halloween restraint of the Tri-Cities, spending a little more than $64,000 in 2011. The league leader in Kane County probably is Barrington, which spent more than $231,000 in adult costumes. Crain's interactive map is based on zip codes, so you have to do a little mental arithmatic to figure some of the towns' Halloween spending habits, and a few readers commented that a per …

Halloween 2011: Watch Out for Zombies at the Door Tonight

Inspired by movies, books and TV, the undead are big costumes this Halloween.

Harry Potter is out. Zombies are in. As far as the most popular getups for Halloween 2011, “the trendiest costume is—literally—coming back from the dead,” according to the National Retail Federation (NRF)'s website. The NRF, which has surveyed Halloween trends for the past nine years, says more than 2.6 million men, women and children are dressing up as zombies this Halloween. “Due to the popularity of the characters in recent books, television shows and video games, zombie costumes jumped from number 22 last year to number nine on children's top costume list and from number seven to four on the adult list,” according to the NRF. Julane Sullivan of All Dressed Up, 901 N. Batavia Ave., Batavia, agrees. The 20-year owner of one of the …

Moms Talk: When It Comes to Your Kid's Halloween Costume, What Kind of Mom Are You?

Take our Patch poll and leave a comment!

There's a delightful and funny article on mommyshorts.com titled, What Does Your Kid's Halloween Costumes Say About You? Basically, says mommyshorts mom Ilana, there are four types of moms when it comes to choosing Halloween costumes for kids who are either looking for ideas or too young to choose for themselves. What kind of mom are you? (1) The Crafty Mom — Hand-made all the way. (2) The Clever Mom — This is the mom with the sense of humor. The toddler as Elvis, Sarah Palin or Nacho Libre. If done just right, they're the most adorable trick-or-treaters you see on Halloween night. If not, they can be in almost-painful poor taste. (3) The Store Bought Mom — Straight to the party-outlet store, do not pass Go but be prepared to spend $30. (4…
