Burglary Reports: One From a Car, the Other a Break-In at Good Templar

Two burglaries were collected in Geneva police reports this week: A wallet from a car on Bent Tree Drive and water bottles from a cottage at Good Templar Park

Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. Unless, of course, you're looking for it in a cottage at Good Templar Park. This blotter item, which would fall into the category of "different," was one of two burglary reports collected this week from the Geneva Police Department. Burglary—Someone broke into one of the cottages at Good Templar Park and took a case of water sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30, Geneva police reports said. Earlier in the year, two other cottages at Good Templar were broken into, according to reports. The damage to the property and the theft of the water was estimated at $200. Burglary to Motor Vehicle—Someone took a wallet from an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in the 2000 …

Reports: 'Friends' Ready to Take Over Title for Viking Ship

CBS-2 and WBBM News Radio are saying that the Friends of the Viking Ship, located at Good Templar Park, are close to taking over the title from the Chicago Park District.

CBS-2 and WBBM are reporting that the Viking ship housed at Good Templar Park is soon to be officially handed over to the Geneva-based group that's been raising funds for its repair and permanent home for several years. According to the story posted this morning (Sept. 12, 2012) on the CBS Chicago website, Lorain Straw, who heads up Friends of the Viking Ship, is about to take over the ship's title on behalf of Friends of the Vikings Ship Inc. The Chicago Tribune had reported back in June that the Chicago Park District was hoping to unload its official responsibility to take care of the 1890s-era replica of an ancient Viking ship. The ship has been housed at Good Templar Park in Geneva for several years.  The ship was built by Norwegians …

Fire Flares Up Sunday Along Bike Path Between Good Templar, Oak Hill

Dry leaves along the bike path, in the woods of Good Templar, start smoky fire on Sunday afternoon.

A fire started along the bike path between Good Templar Park and Oak Hill Cemetary late Sunday afternoon. At around 3:50 p.m., smoke billowed over Oak Hill Cemetery that looked like someone had started a good-sized leaf fire. That was pretty much exactly it. Leaves were on fire along the bicycle path between the two fences—one fence that surrounds the perimeter of Good Templar, the other that stretches along the south side of Oak Hill Cemetery. The bicycle path runs between the two properties from Bennett Street to xxxx. The fire had spread a good 30 yards along the path and inside the woods of Good Templar Park. Police arrived within about 10 minutes of the call-in, and Fire Department personnel a few minutes later. The flames were doused…

Beth Bales: Celebrate 100 Years of Swedish Heritage

No, not the Swedish Days festival—that's next week. The International Order of the Good Templars mark the 100th anniversary of Swedish Day this Sunday at Good Templar Park in Geneva.

Before the annual Geneva extravaganza that celebrates our Swedish heritage is another, smaller—and also annual—event that celebrates Swedish heritage. This one is Swedish Day, and this year is the 100th annual celebration of the ethnic festival. (The Geneva Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Swedish Days festival is next week.) Swedish Day is held each year on the third Sunday of June—since 1925 at Good Templar Park in Geneva—and is the Midwest’s oldest midsummer festival. It’s organized by the Swedish Day Committee of the International Order of the Good Templars. That organization promotes “the ideals of temperance, peace and brotherhood.”  Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Drive, is across from the western entrance to the Geneva East …
