The Geneva Public Library posts a blog announcing the signing of the contract to purchase the former Cetron property as a future library site.
The Geneva Public Library has signed a contract to purchase the Cetron Building. After nearly three years of waiting and negotiations, the library has posted a blog saying it has signed a contract to purchase the 2.25-acre site on Hamilton and Richards streets. The Library Board approved the purchase in August 2010 but did not get a signed contract from the owner until early February 2013. "We are now in our period of due diligence, which allows us to conduct a site assessment to evaluate the extent of any environmental risks on the land," the blog states. Some of the concerns about the site were that chemicals or other contaminants that might have been left over from previous uses. The build has housed Continent Electric, for example, …

Geneva's Library District director asks Kane County election officials whether the district should certify a candidate who is running for seats on both the Geneva Park Board and Geneva Library Board.
In response to Mr. Moffat’s recent statements, I felt that I needed to explain the rationale for the Library’s actions. In the event that Mr. Moffat is elected to both governmental bodies, I felt it best to know the possible outcomes sooner rather than later. No one wants the Library to be placed in a position where hasty and perhaps incorrect decisions are made. I was already aware of the question being raised in regard to Mr. Moffat’s candidacy for the Park Board and School Board and was concerned that the same question might be asked relative to the Park and Library Districts. Therefore, I contacted our attorney, who researched the situation and felt it was in the District’s best interest to obtain the opinion of the Director of …

Mike, Why do these matters always require a legal opinion instead of a voter decision? The law is still not very clear about what constitutes incompatibility of office. Court decisions have been based upon potential agreements and contracts between government agencies in which there may be a conflict of interest between the agencies. The implications are that each government agency exists for its…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Geneva's library director points out process, challenges of moving to the Cetron site.
To the Editor: In light of Mike Bruno’s June 8 blog post, I would like to highlight some of the issues related to the Cetron building. The library deals with space issues on a daily basis at our current site. We have tried to communicate this as best we can to the general public. I feel it is important to remind everyone that our district serves a significantly larger population than just the city of Geneva. To put it in perspective, the center of the Library District is actually near Delnor Hospital. While the population of Geneva is about 21,000, the Geneva Library District serves over 30,000 people. That means we have a significant number of taxpayers outside the city limits that we are responsible to. Our current Library building will …
