Geneva Township Trustee Richard Sharp: "Mark has run his job more efficiently and more thriftily than any other past road commissioner, and I have seen many."
To the Editor: We have an important election coming up on Tuesday April 9. Many local offices will be filled with qualified representatives of our community. I would like to bring emphasis to one candidate in particular. The person I am speaking about is Mark T. Wissing, who is running for re-election as the Geneva Township commissioner of highways. I want to give you some reasons to return Mark to that office. As a Geneva Township trustee, I have overseen a lot of road commissioners. Mark is a standout, and I can safely say the very best road commissioner I have witnessed in all of my years in elected office. Mr. Wissing has accomplished what previous commissioners have said they would do and failed to do. Monthly, the township trustees …

Kane County officials are wondering about the potential impacts of a state bill that would allow the elimination of township government by local referendum.
A pending state bill that would give residents a chance to vote on the elimination of township government has ignited a number of questions from Kane County officials, The Beacon-News reports. According to the legislation, township functions—from road maintenance to senior services—would be shifted to county governments. Voters would have to give their thumbs up via referendum, and votes would be taken by individual service area rather than statewide. Kane County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong presented a report on the legislation Friday to the Kane County Legislative Committee. Many have argued that township government is an additional layer of taxation which duplicates some of the services provided by counties and …

Am I missing something? As far as I can tell, townships CAN be dissolved county by county, not statewide as the article suggests. Look at the IL Township Code (60 ILCS 1/25-5)   more ›
Reports: A township electoral board denies Geoffrey Carreiro a shot at the April 9 ballot after his petition is challenged by a Township Board member.
A Geneva Township electoral board has rejected the petition of a candidate who filed a petition to run for Geneva Township clerk, according to an article in the Daily Herald. The electoral board made the decision at 4 p.m. Thursday during a hearing at the township office, 400 Wheeler Drive. Geoffrey Carreiro submitted a petition with 162 signatures endorsing his candidacy for the position being vacated by longtime Township Clerk Barb Olson. That's just six more than the required 156, according to articles in the Kane County Chronicle and Daily Herald. His petition was challenged by Geneva Township Trustee Robert Kovacs, who said 19 of the signatures on the petition were invalid, either because the signers weren't registered voters in …

I find this whole affair very dissappointing. I will probably be at the next meeting and will make a three minute (the limit) comment. I will also be calling Geoffrey Carreiro to offer any assistance with his write in campaign. I encourage anyone else that finds this unsettling to do the same. I also encourage the Patch or any other news outlet to attend a meeting or two. This Board appears to be…   more ›
And Geneva Township Trustee Robert Kovacs' recent pronouncement is the best reason to do it!
In eight years of facing down that glowering keyboard, I’ve never heard anything quite like this. And remember, I’ve caught ‘em in outright lies, I’ve caught ‘em with their hand in the cookie jar, and I’ve caught ‘em making remarks that’d make Mel Gibson blush. Art Linkletter was wrong: It’s politicians who say the darndest things, not kids! When attempting to explain why he was trying to throw the only township clerk candidate off the ballot by a petition challenge, Geneva Township Trustee Robert Kovacs provided the Chronicle with this fascinating logic: “I found 19 problems (signatures), and I am contesting it. I want him off the ballot. I don’t know him personally; I don’t know if he is good, bad or mediocre. If I can remove him from …

Bob, I truly appreciate your response. The other day was thinking of how I'm beginning to really understand your frustration and irritation with some of the local political bodies. I think I'm getting it. It feels like kovacs and the Township board in general are essentially daring the public to care. The reasoning behind the challenge is exactly what's wrong with certain public bodies. They …   more ›
All of the highway regulatory signs managed by the Highway Department will be replaced to comply with the new Federal Highway Administration Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
All highway regulatory signs managed by the Geneva Township Highway Department will be replaced with larger and brighter signs this month. The sign replacement complies with the new Federal Highway Administration manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Crews will be working along the roadside near the places that signs will be replaced or installed. JULIE location services will identify the areas affected to prevent underground utility damage by the installation company Traffic Control Protection. The summer construction season has arrived. Bridges and roads will be repaired or replaced, the parkway grass and trees will get trimmed, utilities will be installed or improved. "Skilled crews perform this hard and dangerous work in the …

Yes, Karen. Oh how right you are. Now that you and many others on Lauzen's side have trashed people for months, it's time that everyone behave and act civilized. What was I thinking? Yes, stick to principals. Of course. Because no-one in the Chris Lauzen Fan Club would ever devolve into personal attacks. That's why we have so many FOIA requests going around, and people commenting on a daily basis…   more ›
Geneva Township residents have until Thursday to file an assessment appeal with the Kane County Board of Review. (Calling the township assessor's office might be a good first step, however.) Coincidentally, a county taxpayer clinic is on tap for Tuesday e
Genevans unhappy with their property assessment have only a few more days to do anything that could impact the tax bill they’re going to receive next May. Thursday, Nov. 17, is the deadline for filing an appeal on assessments in Geneva Township with the Kane County Board of Review. Geneva Township Assessor Denise Lacure said to date, only 32 appeals by township residents have been filed with the county, far less than usual. And township residents may want to start with her office, instead of going right to the county level. “If we find an error, if their assessment is not equitable, if there’s an exemption they’re entitled to, we make the change” quickly, she said. “Our philosophy is to work with the taxpayers.” This year was a …
Take a look inside the Geneva Township's May 19 meeting. There, you'll see a more folksy form of government that's doing the same thing as the city or the School Board—looking for new ways to trim the budget .
On a beautiful spring evening, Wheeler Park is a great place to play. The sounds of a baseball game echo across the landscape—bats crack, coaches shout and parents cheer. But in an understated building just a few paces away, it’s a work night for the Geneva Township Board of Trustees. Trustees Sharon Brazill, John Connolly, Richard Sharp and Supervisor J. Patrick Jaeger gather around a horseshoe-shaped table. Jaeger notices the absence of their fifth member, Robert Kovacs, and Connolly reminds them Kovacs is in California for a wedding. "It’s like 75 and sunny 300 days a year,” Connolly says, and everybody laughs. How does anybody there get work done? Somebody compliments Jaeger on his new gavel, and he grins proudly. “Paid two …

Thanks, Mitch. Did you see his new ad here on the Patch asking for our vote?. He resembles Paul Bunyan in his photo ready to demolish a thing or too. I tried to leave a comment and there is no comment section. I wanted to ask him where's his logo cap and can us taxpayers get a refund on all of his expenditures? I think this is a prime example of highway robbery!   more ›
