Geneva Makes Newsweek's List of Top 1,000 High Schools in the U.S.

The magazine's 2013 report out this week recognizes 84 Illinois schools.

Newsweek has ranked Geneva High School at No. 926 among high schools in the country. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about GHS's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses. 21 Geneva Teachers Set for Retirement

A “drop-in” reception will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 9 at Geneva Middle School South followed by a brief recognition ceremony from 4:30 to 4:45 p.m.

Geneva High School is recognized for partnering with AFS for more than five decades.

Batavia Highlands School-Boundary Adjustment Decision Expected Monday

Parents of Batavia Highlands students are protesting a proposal to move children from Williamsburg Elementary School to Western Avenue School.

The School District 304 Board of Education is expected to decide Monday whether to move students who live in the Batavia Highlands neighborhood from Williamsburg Elementary School to Western Avenue School for the 2013-14 school year. Parents of grade-school students protested at the April 8 School Board meeting, carrying signs and offering an empassioned plea to keep their kids from having to make the move. "Somebody come to my house at night and put my 8-year-old to bed when he's crying, because he has friends he's not going to see next year," said Heather Anderson. Parents also said they believe the School District is showing bias toward "Area 20," which is a Batavia neighborhood that falls within the Geneva School District boundaries…

Moms, Kids Upset About Proposed School-Boundary Changes

Batavia Highlands residents question reason for 16 or 17 students to move from Williamsburg to Western Avenue elementary school.

Moms from a neighborhood in Batavia Highlands gave an impassioned plea this week to keep their kids from having to move from Williamsburg Elementary School to Western Avenue School in Geneva next year. A half dozen or more moms and family members came to Monday's School Board meeting to protest the proposal, which they say would result in just 16 students making the transfer. The School District had held four public forums in February on the boundary changes and proposed in March to move students from two neighbohoods, one in Batavia Highlands, the other in the downtown Geneva area. Geneva DECA Students Knock It Out of the Park in State; 3 Qualify for International Competition

Geneva DECA students show their skills in business and marketing, not only to Illinois, but to the world.

Among the many, often-under-recognized achievements in Geneva are the awards, accolades and competitive drive of students in the high school's DECA program. DECA stands for, or at least used to stand for, Distributive Education Clubs of America, a high school club focused on business and marketing. Geneva Police: Incident Harrison Street School Involved Juvenile Threat to Park District Employee

Geneva Police Department offers additional information following Friday's incident at the school and subsequent police presence.

Geneva police officials said Tuesday that the Friday incident at Harrison Street School involved a male teenager making threatening remarks to a Geneva Park District employee. Geneva police Cmdr. Julie Nash said the teen approached the Park District employee, who was at Harrison Street School for an after-school program, at around 5:07 p.m. April 4. The teen made an inappropriate comment to the employee that was threatening in nature, Nash said. "The comment was very general and not specific to anyone," she said.
