Share Your Prom Photos on Patch!

If you've got photos, why not share them for the world to see?

Paula and I worked the post-prom for the first time this year, and it was fantastic. In retrospect, I wish I had taken photos for Geneva Patch, but I didn't want to interrupt the fun—and I was so busy dealing Texas Holdem, I didn't have much time for photography. If you've got prom photos to share—pre-prom, during prom, post prom—we'd love to see them. Just click on the upload photos button and add them here! If you'd prefer, you can email them to rickn@patch.com. If you add them here and leave a comment, I'll feature your photo on this article and change the feature photo throughout the day. To prime the pump, I've posted some prom 2012 photos, as a trip down memory lane. But we need some 2013 photo for the archives, for posterity and for…

Winter Storm UPDATE: High Winds More Dangerous Than Snow

Got news to report or photo to share? Add comments and photos to this story and help keep your fellow Geneva residents informed. Already 500 flights have been cancelled at O'Hare.

Geneva sidestepped much of the massive snowstorm that was expected to ravage the area Thursday night. As of 10 p.m., the National Weather Service had downgraded the accumulation expectations to an inch or two. The wind was furious, as expected, and some power outages were reported, although none we are aware of in Geneva. If you run into anything newsworthy, please post a comment and/or a photo with this article.   9:40 p.m. NWS: Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. 8:09 p.m. Still not much snow to show. (See photo.) From the National Weather Service: Snow with areas of blowing snow before 1 a.m., then areas of blowing snow and a slight chance of snow after 1 a.m. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 21. …

Unemployment Report: Tri-Cities Jobless Numbers Down From October 2011

Unfortunately, unemployment in our area slightly increased from September 2012 to October.

There's good news and bad news regarding unemployment numbers in neighboring Batavia and St. Charles: They're better than they were a year ago but worse than last month. Geneva isn't included because the stats are for communities with 25,000 population or more. The data is released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Unemployment rates in Illinois overall reflect the same pattern. They increased slightly from September 2012 to October, but are still down compared to 2011, according to new figures released last week.  "Falling unemployment rates across our state and the lowest October rates since 2008 show that that our steady economic progress continues," IDES Director Jay Rowell said in a …

Help Me Find the World's Ugliest Holiday Sweater

Geneva Patch friends: Share your ugly sweaters—literally and figuratively—with an editor on a quest.

The guantlet has been thrown. My youngest daughter has initiated the first-ever Nagel-McGorty-Williams-Krause holiday sartorial challenge: Who can wear the ugliest holiday sweater on Christmas Eve? She's very good at these things, my daughter. She has obtained her ugly sweater, and she's actually in the process of making it uglier still. She is sewing. She is decorating with bobbles and bangles and beads. She is already doing a victory dance, talking trash, slamming her palms against her chest and saying, "Welcome to Canada, punk!" I'm not sure what that means, but I suspect that I'm in trouble. My daughter has every advantage in this competition: talent, youth, energy and drive. But I've got one thing she doesn't: I've got you. Please …

Q&A: Geneva's Garrett Lance Talks About Being a White House Intern

How have Garrett Lance's experiences in Geneva helped him become a White House intern? Read on.

If you've ever considered your 6 degrees of separation from President Barack Obama, well, we've got good news. You probably can shave that down to 2 degrees, thanks to Geneva's Garrett Lance. It's not that Garrett's rubbing elbows with the president every day, but he is serving as a White House intern through December. We caught up with him via the proper channels, and he was kind enough to return the following Q&A.   How did you land the internship? I applied to the White House Internship Program last spring. I was very excited when I received my acceptance.      What experiences will you take from Geneva that you can apply in D.C.? I think that, overall, Geneva is an engaged community. That local perspective is important when interning …

I am so pleased to read that Garrett is interning at The White House. I worked with Garrett when he was in 4th grade--I was one of his teachers at Coultrap in Geneva and remember him to be an intelligent and hard working student. Congratulations to you Garrett! "Way to go!"   more ›
