The magazine's 2013 report out this week recognizes 84 Illinois schools.
Newsweek has ranked Geneva High School at No. 926 among high schools in the country. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about GHS's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses. The final scores then determined Newsweek’s final rankings. You can …
If you've got photos, why not share them for the world to see?
Paula and I worked the post-prom for the first time this year, and it was fantastic. In retrospect, I wish I had taken photos for Geneva Patch, but I didn't want to interrupt the fun—and I was so busy dealing Texas Holdem, I didn't have much time for photography. If you've got prom photos to share—pre-prom, during prom, post prom—we'd love to see them. Just click on the upload photos button and add them here! If you'd prefer, you can email them to rickn@patch.com. If you add them here and leave a comment, I'll feature your photo on this article and change the feature photo throughout the day. To prime the pump, I've posted some prom 2012 photos, as a trip down memory lane. But we need some 2013 photo for the archives, for posterity and for…
The Red team is second at the Indy Jam Fest, Black is co-champ in Bronze Division.
Three Geneva basketball players—Chris Parrilli, Nate Navagato, Cam Cook—turned in great performances in Indianapolis, IN, for the 17-and-under Black Team of the Wheaton/Naperville-based Mercury Elite organization. Mercry Elite sent two of its 17-U teams to the Hoosier Jam Fest and both teams enjoyed a level of success. The Red team, coached by Naperville’s Eric Pauga, took second place overall in the 48-team tournament Sunday, April 21 at Ben Davis High School, while the Black team, coached by Downers Grove North’s Jim Thomas, overcame a one-point loss in a pool play game to ring up three wins to win a co-championship in the Bronze Division. “This was the first live weekend in which NCAA Division I coaches were allowed to watch players and…
Geneva High School students of the month.
Geneva High School has many outstanding students. Here are the Students of the Month for April 2013. Elise Watson, Grade 12 Nominated by Sophia Michelak For my student of the month, I chose Elise Watson. I have had the honor and joy of being Elise’s P.E. teachers for the last four semesters. Elise brings this unbelievable positive energy to class every day which makes my job that much more enjoyable. She is hard working, enthusiastic and creative in my class. She is very easy to work with and gets along well with all students. Elise will truly be missed next year and my class will not be the same without her. Good luck in all you that you do, Elise! Grace Cerny, Grade 11 Nominated by Mary Limberis It is with great pleasure I nominate …
Geneva High School is recognized for partnering with AFS for more than five decades.
Have you ever sponsored an AFS student or had one of your kids benefit from a trip to study overseas? If so, leave a comment in the field below and attach a photo of your exchange student. And if you are one of those folks, you are not alone, by any means. Genevans have participated in American Field Service exchanges every year for more than 50 years now, and since 1997 have hosted from four to six students each year. Geneva Community High School was recognized by AFS at Monday night's School Board meeting as one of the Top 100 Schools in the Nation. GHS organizers Robbin Lang and Martha Scatterday, along with three of this year’s AFS students—Matteo Boi (Italy), Dasha Khodak (Ukraine), and Guillaume Rey (Switzerland)—presented the award …

Well, you can be on graduation day if you make a donation to the Geneva Academic Foundation.
For anyone old enough to remember the Bob Uecker line in the Miller Lite commercial, this one's for you. Uecker, who will be inducted into the announcers' wing of the Hall of Fame on July 27 this year, is famous for a lot of things other than his Major League Baseball career, and one of them is the commercial where he utters the line ... "I must be in the front row!" Of course, in the commercial, he's not. He's in one of the noseblead seats—which is where most of us parents are on graduation day for the pomp and circumstance at Geneva High School or Geneva Middle School—North or South. But, if you really do want to be in the front row, here's your chance. The Geneva Academic Foundation has front row and reserved graduation seats available …
Geneva DECA students show their skills in business and marketing, not only to Illinois, but to the world.
Among the many, often-under-recognized achievements in Geneva are the awards, accolades and competitive drive of students in the high school's DECA program. DECA stands for, or at least used to stand for, Distributive Education Clubs of America, a high school club focused on business and marketing. Geneva High School DECA students on Monday (April 10, 2013) received the Tradition of Excellence Award from the Geneva School Board in recognition of some very impressive achievements. Three students have qualified for international competition coming up in a couple weeks in California. DECA State Competition — International Qualifiers Andrew Thomas — Illinois State Officer, Senior Management Institute; 1st Place Business Finance; 3rd Place …

The city sets new rules for parking on Maple, Wilow and Center, but a neighbor notes that parking at the football field and Center Street are not full. Are the parking rates too high for kids?
A homeowner living near Geneva High School is raising the issue of student parking following new parking restrictions on Maple, Willow and Center streets. Cheryl Davis, who lives in the 600 block of Willow Lane, said homeowners received a letter from the Geneva Police Department saying that those streets will have the same restrictions and resident-parking requirements as the streets closer to the school. "I see that the football field lot and the lot on Center Street are not full, not even close to full," she said. "The inconvenience that this restriction will cause residents is not the correction to the problem. Fix the open parking lot situation and use the resources that are available." One of the issues, Davis says, is that the cost …

I agree, Andrew. It always irked me that my kids had to pay for parking when they were in high school. I pay a lot of taxes to geneva 304 and paying up to $200 extra a year per car is robbery. It's simply a scam that many people don't seem to care about. For those who say that the kids should take the bus, that's not always an option. My one son had early bird PE for two years, so he could leave …   more ›
Tradition, music and family take stage in the Tony-winning musical March 14-16 at Geneva High School. But order now, because only a limited number of tickets will be available at the door.
The small Russian village of Anatevka will come to life March 14-16 as Geneva High School presents the well-loved, Tony Award-winning musical Fiddler on the Roof. The classic tale centers on the life of one family: Tevye, wife Golde and their five daughters in Czarist Russia in 1905. The musical, by Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, includes some of the most popular songs of musical theater, including Tradition, If I Were a Rich Man, Sunrise, Sunset, Matchmaker and Do You Love Me? Senior Nick Bianchina portrays the hard-working, deeply religious milkman Tevye, struggling to maintain family and Jewish traditions even as outside influences and changes encroach. The struggle is intensified within as his three older daughters, in …
