Cultural Arts Commission Will Start a Fund-Raising Foundation

With an eye on art purchases and maybe even a cultural arts center, the CAC gets the city's blessing to start a 501c3 fundraising foundation.

The Geneva Cultural Arts Commission received the city of Geneva’s blessing this week to form a 501c3 foundation that can help raise funds to purchase art or build a community arts center. Cultural Arts Commission Chairman Tim Vetang addressed City Council Committee of the Whole members Monday, saying he was there to inform aldermen and ask if they had any objection to the creation of a fundraising group. The CAC is a citizen subcommittee appointed by the mayor with the City Council’s blessing. “We don’t have to have your approval, but we wanted to make sure you didn’t have any problem with this action going forward,” Vetang said. First Ward Alderman Chuck Brown asked for clarification on the function and relationship of the three entities…

Beth Bales: Dancing Done, But Glow Remains

The 2011 version of 'Dancing With the Geneva Stars' is over. And I think we'd all say it was quite the ride.

And so, it’s over.  Months of preparation, hours of dance lessons, a few sleepless hours spent wondering, “what did I get us into?” and many, many hours of practice. Suddenly, “Dancing with the Geneva Stars” is just a memory. And what a memory it is. Golden, in many respects, as my husband and I, more accustomed (especially Steve) to behind-the-scenes work for school and community theatrical productions, ventured onto the stage as performers.  But it was not only something we’ll never forget, it’s something I’d recommend in a heartbeat to others. I’m pretty sure all my fellow dancers would, as well. And I say that as someone who, after being in the spotlight, knows she prefers backstage. The afternoon rehearsal was dreadful; Steve and I …

Beth Bales: Get Tickets Now for 'Dancing'

Approximately 15 to 20 reservations remain for the Feb. 4 "Dancing with the Geneva Stars" event. And that's not the only dance in town! The Geneva Park District has dances on tap, as well.

There still are some tickets remaining to the upcoming “Dancing With the Geneva Stars” fund-raiser, according to Carolyn Hill of the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission, and coordinator of all things DWTGS. As of Tuesday afternoon, approximately 15 to 20 reservations remained available for the Feb. 4 event, during which six Geneva couples (including yours truly) will dance to raise money for the commission and for the Geneva Academic Foundation. Each couple has learned, courtesy of State Street Dance Studio, a dance routine to be performed that evening.  Reservations are due in the next few days, as Hill needs to turn in the final number of reservations to Eagle Brook Country Club this weekend.  On that night, the cash bar will open at 6 p.m…

Dancing With the Geneva Stars: Meet Eric and Kari Bartel

This is the third in a series of stories profiling the teams competing in the 2012 Dancing with the Geneva Stars. Online voting starts Jan. 3!

Eric and Kari Bartel may not be America’s best dancers, but they are certainly America’s best explosive chemists. The two met each other over an explosion in Organic Chemistry class and have been happily married for 25 years. Eric works as an Orthopedic surgeon for Fox Valley Orthopedics, and Kari works as keeper of the hearth and home. Within the community, Kari serves on the Board of Trustees for the Geneva United Methodist Church and the Friends Board for Tri-City Family Services. Eric is a team physician for Geneva High School athletes. While Kari has taken dance lessons and enjoys dancing, Eric has not danced, but is open to the idea. They both like to listen to classic rock music and have many favorite artists. When it comes to …

Best of Beth Bales: Time to 'Dance' with Geneva Stars

An experience begins, as my husband and I, with five other couples, embark on the odyssey that is 'Dancing with the Geneva Stars.'

All I can say is, Laura Rush and Derek Swanson are going to be Homecoming King and Queen of “Dancing with the Geneva Stars.”  They were, and are, both fired up and rarin’ to go, full of wisecracks and jokes, and full of enthusiasm for the “Stars” experience.  They were probably the only ones NOT nervous this past Sunday, as 12 strong, we entered State Street Dance Studio for our first session of “Dancing.”  They were probably the only ones not asking themselves, “What are we all doing here—and why did we ever agree to participate in a dance competition where hundreds of people will be watching?” Linda Cunningham of State Street Dance welcomed us all. And with that, our adventure with “DWTGS” began.  The competition is a fund-raiser for …
