A fun-filled night of dancing ends with Geneva aldermen taking the top prize.
Between the two, this dance team racked up 143 years of experience, MC and Mayor Kevin Burns said during their introduction. And that's one of the reasons the Geneva aldermanic tandem of Sam Hill and Dorothy Flanagan are 2013 champions of Dancing With the Geneva Stars. Hill of the 1st Ward and Flanagan of the 4th wowed the Saturday night audience with a clever and fun Rumba that started with the twosome hobbling up with canes and finished with some hip movement that couldn't be matched by dancers half their age. Lynn & Steve Saunders have shared 25 years of marriage, but the story of how they met proves that Steve knew she was “the one” from the start. Steve was travelling to Formula 1 races in Europe, bringing back racing items, and then selling them through Autoweek. To accomplish this, Steve needed the ability to accept credit cards via mail order and called the bank in Chicago, where Lynn answered his call. The bank she worked at offered Merchant Services that would accommodate his request and several meetings ensued. Eric and Elizabeth Ott met for the first time in 2001 at a Triathlon Time Trial at the Delnor Fitness Center while participating in some of their favorite activities — running, biking and swimming. Although they did not get together for a few years, they ran in the same circle of people who encouraged their friendship. As of Aug. 10, the Otts celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary. They made Geneva their hometown about 2 ½ years ago because they always enjoyed the area for biking on the Fox River Trail, hanging out at Island Park and experiencing the town’s atmosphere and friendly people. This past September, Kathy and Adil Jaffer celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary. They met when working next door to each other, and Adil came into Kathy’s shop needing a haircut. Kathy continues to work as a hair stylist, and Adil currently owns three Rosati Pizza stores. Kathy grew up in the Wheaton area, and she and Adil chose to move to Geneva 17 years ago. They were attracted to Geneva because of the beautiful river and downtown area, the friendly people, and the excellent school system for their children. Their favorite local eateries include Graham’s, Graham’s 318, and Wildwood. As the only unmarried couple dancing together in this year’s event, Dorothy Flanagan and Sam Hill have been friends and co-workers at the Geneva City Council for more than 11 years. They both enjoy dancing and have supported this event every year since its inception in 2009. They are thankful and excited to dance in this wonderful fundraiser. Dorothy Flanagan is the vice president of marketing and sales for Copia International (a software publishing company) and has been alderman of Geneva’s 4th Ward for the past 19 years. She also co-chairs the Geneva Beautification Committee with Sherry Weitl to coordinate the volunteer efforts to plant the knuckles and planters in downtown Geneva. Justin and Katlyn Eggar are St. Charles residents who just moved here two years ago to be closer to family, especially their nephew. They met in North Carolina, where Justin was one of Katlyn’s customers at work, and they have been married for three years. They are currently the agency owners of Eggar Allstate in Geneva. Their agency was voted “One of the Best Insurance Agencies” in Kane County by the Kane County Chronicle Reader’s Choice Awards. As small business owners, they are members of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce through which they help sponsor and volunteer for Swedish Days, Festival of the Vine, and the Christmas Walk.
