The National Weather Service-Chicago still has a flood warning in place for parts of the Fox River, but the river level is receding.
A Flood Warning remains in effect for parts of the Fox River, but the National Weather Service-Chicago says it probably will be lifted by Sunday. Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles and communities along the Fox are still recovering from the April 18 rains that flooded basements, back yards, roads and property along the river. The Flood Warning continues for the Fox River at Montgomery affecting Kane and Kendall counties. The Fox River at the Algonquin Tailwater is also still at flood levels as of Tuesday, April 30. "The river will continue to fall to below flood stage by early Sunday morning," according to the Flood Warning. At the Algonquin Tailwater, the flood stage was 11.4 feet as of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The eagles still are landing along the Fox River—and in this case, one is under attack.
After the emergency disaster drill Friday at Geneva Middle School South, AJ demanded a walk. So I took him on one of the usual routes to the Fox River, just to see how high the river might be. The answer to that one: Still pretty high. We couldn't get through to Division Street along the bike path—the river still was over the bank and the Fox River Trail. But on the way home, we saw a pair of eagles gliding overhead. They were much closer than you might think by looking at this video. I did my best to capture the majesty of the birds within the limits of my equipment and my talent. The National Weather Service river flood warnings will continue, but the river is expected to crest over the weekend, which promises to be sunny on Saturday and some clouds Sunday.
Officials say monitoring the cresting Fox River will be crucial in the coming days in terms of the response to local flooding. The National Weather Service, as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the Fox River was more than 3.21 feet above flood stage. Kane County Office of Emergency Management estimates the Fox River should crest by Saturday, April 20. The river’s crest — it’s highest point, or the peak of the flood level — could be affected by more rain, which would mean a greater crest that probably would arrive later than is forecast now. While a second wave of storms originally was predicted to follow the waves of thunderstorms that raked northern Illinois on Wednesday night through early Thursday, the forecast was revised Thursday, and now only …

Below-zero wind chills are expected Monday night as a cold front rushes our way.
The National Weather Service-Chicago has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook that warns of below-zero wind chills and aweful visibility. And you can add that warning to the already existing Flood Watch that's lingering for the Fox River. The Hazardous Weather Outook starts Monday afternoon, as a strong cold front rushes east across the area. "Sporadic wind gusts to near 40 mph are likely. In addition, isolated snow showers are possible, which together with the wind may result in brief periods of greatly reduced visibility," the NWS-C says. "The quickly-falling temperatures may lead ot freezing of wet surfaces across the area." Bald eagles descended upon the Fox River this week. AJ and I spotted one at Pottawatomie Park Golf Course when we were walking in the North Woods in St. Charles. Emails and Facebook posts say there are some at the Kane County Government Center. Pictured here are some spotted in Oswego, as well as a pair spotted north of Boy Scout Island in St. Charles.
