Patch Poll: What Do You Think About the New Name for the Cougars' Stadium?

From Elfstrom Stadium to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Even the Kane County Cougars are getting into the corporate sponsorship act.

About the same time that the Kane County Cougars were announcing that Fifth Third Bank had bought the naming rights for Elfstrom Stadium, a story on the Washington Post website was saying how the Olympic Stadium in London probably will have its Olympics name for only about four months. After that, the name will go to the highest bidder in hopes of covering "the $149 million cost of converting the 80,000-seat stadium to a 60,000-seat venue," the story said. No one knows yet how much Fifth Third Bank is paying for the rights to rename Elfstrom Stadium as Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, but it certainly has to make economic sense. Nor are we sure at this point whether Kane County taxpayers will get any piece of the naming-rights windfall. The good…

This survey is useless anyway. The new name will stand no matter what Geneva residents think. End of story.   more ›

Elfstrom Stadium to Be Renamed Fifth Third Bank Ballpark

The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with Fifth Third Bank, have announced a five-year sponsorship agreement that will rename Elfstrom Stadium.

The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with Fifth Third Bank, have announced a five-year sponsorship agreement that will rename Elfstrom Stadium. Philip B. Elfstrom Stadium, as it was originally named when opening as the home of the Cougars in 1991, will now be officially known as Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.  As part of the renaming process, the Kane County Events Center will be officially renamed as the Philip B. Elfstrom Events Center to honor the man who was instrumental in bringing minor league baseball to Kane County. Elfstrom, the former Kane County Forest Preserve president and chairman of the Kane County Board, is regarded as a baseball visionary for building a minor league baseball stadium in the shadows of two Major League clubs …

Ironic that when I was employed by 5/3 I fought tooth and nail and begged them to do some sort of advertising. They wanted to be like Chase but without spending money, i.e. Marketing 101. However, this now means bankers will have to push more fee based "products" onto customers to make up sponsorship funding! Beware!   more ›

Cougars 2011 Season Comes to an End

It was a great second half for Kane County Cougars baseball, and a great start as an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

Apologies for not keeping up with the whirlwind finish of the Kane County Cougars. We last reported the first win of the postseason against the Burlington Bees. The Cougars went on to beat the Bees in a make-or-break game to advance to the best-of-three Western Division championship round versus Quad City. The Cougars lost the first game in the series, then ... well, there's a reason Quad City is called the Bandits. The full game story is below. Although the season ended on Sept. 11, it was a tremendous first year as an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The on-field action featured some of the top prospects in the Royals organization, such as Cheslor Cuthbert. The team, led by first-year manager Vance Wilson, advanced to the Division …

Kane County Cougars 'Take Me Out With the Crowd'

A play area for children, lawn seating and sense of community bring crowds to Elfstrom Stadium, home of the Kane County Cougars, in Geneva.

Crowds of people met in Geneva on Sunday to visit with friends and neighbors, eat, drink and spend a summer afternoon out with their families—they also had the option of watching a minor league baseball game. The Kane County Cougars home games at Elfstrom Stadium feature a festival atmosphere that includes the KidZone interactive play area, two lawn seating sections where spectators can spread out blankets or sit on lawn chairs and opportunities to interact with the minor league baseball players. Despite the sweltering heat on July 17, the team lined up before the game and signed autographs for fans. Several young boys asked players to sign their T-shirts, while other kids and adults offered up baseball caps, balloons and arms for them to …
