Kane County Farmers Now Eligible for Disaster Aid

USDA gives Lake and McHenry counties primary disaster designations, makes Kane farmers eligible for assistance.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, 14th Congressional District, announced Wednesday that Lake and McHenry counties have received primary disaster designations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which also classified Kane County as “contiguous” and eligible for disaster assistance from the Farm Service Agency. A week ago, the USDA gave Lee and Whiteside counties primary disaster designations, and giving contiguous designations to Bureau, DeKalb, Henry and Kendall counties. “This is the worst drought Illinois has seen in more than 50 years,” Hultgren said. “Thankfully, farmers, producers and even other businesses in my district can now apply for assistance to maintain stable operations for the year, despite the extraordinary circumstances.” On …

Dangerous Temperatures for Next Couple Days; Drought Deepens

Thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the overall forecast is for more very hot, very dry weather.

The dangerously high temperatures and drought continue today (Monday, July 16) and tomorrow, with no end in sight. According to the National Weather Service report for Geneva, the temperature today is supposed to get up to 96, and there's a Hazardous Weather Outlook in effect. Heat indexes will be up near 100, and there's an air-quality alert for Northwest Indiana. Tomorrow is actually worse, with heat indexes climbing between 100 and 105 degrees. The city has published its report on cooling areas, and the Kane County Health Department has some good advice on how to keep cool and safe. Drought Conditions Cancel Fireworks at West Chicago's Railroad Days

The city of West Chicago announces Friday that it is canceling the Saturday fireworks for Railroad Days, due to the drought conditions.

The city of West Chicago has announced the decision to cancel the fireworks scheduled for dusk at Railroad Days on Saturday, July 14, 2012, due to the prevalent drought conditions.  According to West Chicago Fire Protection District Chief Robert Hodge, the safety was more important than the skyrocket display. "For the safety of the residents and their property and for the preservation of the beautiful park that we enjoy, the Fire District has recommended cancellation of the fireworks," Hodge said. The town loves the fireworks every year. To have them cancelled upset many residents. And while I can understand the rationale behind the cancellation, it was still ridiculous.   more ›
