Coffee lovers from Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles are among the target audience for CoffeeCON 2013, a celebration of all things coffee that takes place May 4 in Warrenville. The event was held for the first time last year and was the brainchild of Kevin Sinnott, a Warrenville resident and coffee authority, who has written extensively on the beverage. Held in Warrenville at the IBEW building, the conference is geared to the consumer and last year drew about 1,200 people, including large number of residents from the surrounding area, including Naperville, Wheaton, Geneva, St. Charles and Lisle. Kane County's Last Strip Club Closing? Blackjacks on Route 25 Denied Liquor License

Kane County won’t issue liquor license sought by prospective buyers of Blackjacks Gentlemen’s Club.

The only strip joint in Kane County could close after county officials narrowly voted down a liquor license request by the two people who are considering buying it, the Daily Herald reports. According to the Daily Herald account, Blackjacks Gentlemen’s Club on Route 25 between Elgin and St. Charles has been operating without a liquor license for about a year. The county reduced the number of its liquor licenses — specifically, the one held by Blackjacks — about a year ago, after its owners pleaded guilty in February 2012 to federal charges related to the club and an illegal Internet gambling operation. The Kane County Board on Tuesday voted 11-10 to deny a liquor license application by Debra Diaz and Seif El Sharif, operating as DD&SS Inc…

Plass Appliance on Randall Road Shuttering its Doors

The appliance retailer, in business since 1938, is set to close its Chicago-area stores in the next month or two, said company President Dale Plass.

Plass Appliance is shuttering its store in Geneva and throughout the Chicago area and plans to focus its energies on a new location it has opened in Florida. The appliance store, which opened a showroom in Villa Park 1938, has locations in Elmhurst, Naperville, Geneva, Elmhurst, Addison and Northbrook. “We just made a decision that now was a good time to close,” said Dale Plass, company president. The announcement of the closure was made about a month ago, he said, adding he expects the stores to close in the next month or two. The company is advertising special liquidation sales with in-stock merchandise up to 30 percent off.  “We opened a location in Florida and will probably focus our energy there,” he said, adding the Florida location …

Little Traveler Changes Name to 'Big Traveler'

"Because after 91 years, we're tired of everyone calling us 'little,' " co-owner Mike Simon says.

Mike Simon, co-owner of The Little Traveler in downtown Geneva, announced this morning that the name of the 91-year-old store will be changing beginning this week to better reflect the true nature of the store. Though its ownership, merchandise, and staff will be the same, its name will now be “The Big Traveler.”   “We decided that, after all these years, it would be a good idea to have the name of the store more accurately reflect what our store is,” said Simon, “There’s not much that’s little about us anymore.” "The only change that will be evident to the public, besides the name change itself, will be a modest redesign of the store’s logo," Simon says  “The cherub (the little boy) on our logo has been redesigned slightly. Although it’s …

Geneva Bank & Trust Open for Business With Pure Oil Attached

The financial institution formerly known as St. Charles Bank & Trust opens its doors for the first time with the former Pure Oil Building attached as a drive-through.

It happened Monday, March 4, with no big fanfare, but the former St. Charles Bank & Trust is now the Geneva Bank & Trust, and it is open for business in the former Pure Oil Building. After more than a year of controversy, the historic Pure Oil Building is still standing, and its adaptive re-use is part of the structure of the new bank. Not only does it bear a Pure Oil-style sign on the outside, but it has a Pure Oil building inside, as well. Mike Bruno, one of the members of the Historic Preservation Commission that denied a demolition permit, praised the outcome Monday night at the Geneva City Council meeting. "Kudos to Geneva Bank," Bruno said. "They to have done a truly stellar job." Mayor Kevin Burns said there is "a vintage Pure Oil …

While the bank did a good job with the drive-through, I agree with Mike that the presence of a drive-through banking facility in the commercial district defeats the purpose of our municipal planning. Our master plans, particularly the current plan, have stressed the importance of pedestrian friendly retail businesses in the downtown commercial district. The first standard for special use, which …   more ›

Geneva Sales Tax Revenue Continues to Look Good

The city of Geneva's sales tax revenue continues a steady climb, according to city reports. That's good news for the local economy.

The city of Geneva again appears to be headed for an upswing in annual sales tax revenue, another good sign for the local economy. According to the report filed in the Feb. 19 City Council packet, sales tax revenue collected in February—representing sales in the key month of November—is up year over year, and the yearly revenue projection indicates the city is headed for its third straight fiscal-year increase. Geneva collected $443,556 in February 2013, compared to $410,882 a year ago. Another piece of good news is that the sales tax the city collects has exceeded its estimates in every month but October (July sales) in the 2012-13 fiscal year.  The city's annual sales-tax revenue peaked at $5,373,906 in FY 2007-08 but plummeted with the …

Actually Rick, the revenue is not so hot. Adjusted for inflation the revenue is down over the past decade. Then adjust for the fact that the tax rate has increased significantly over that time (remember the 2007 1/2% referendum, for example?), and you see that Geneva sales tax revenue is shrinking even after we agreed to pay more! Goldfish Swimming School Coming to Kirk Road

A swimming school for children as young as 4 months to 12 years old will open its doors this summer on Legacy Boulevard on St. Chares’ East Side.

Nearly two years out of college and close to fulfilling his goal of becoming a business entrepreneur, Alex Tyler is afloat in activity. He’s got the building, with room for expansion and parking. He’s hiring a general contractor to install the business’ key elements, and he’s meeting potential customers. There’s fare more to it than that, of course. Opening a new business takes a lot of time and energy, which means Tyler is busy. Yet, he exudes confidence as he talks of his plans, which by his account are going, er, swimmingly. Tyler is the general manager of the Goldfish Swim School, 3455 Legacy Blvd., which is just east of Kirk Road and south of Tyler Road. He hopes to open in June, but that will depend upon how long it takes to install …
