No Alibi This Time: St. Charles Bar Takes Fine, 3-day Suspension

The St. Charles Liquor Commission comes down on the Alibi for third violation since May 2012. The Beehive also is fined.

The city of St. Charles on Monday laid down a $2,000 fine and $500 in costs against two downtown bars, one of which also will have its liquor license suspended for three days later this month. Mayor Donald DeWitte, the city’s liquor commissioner, announced the penalties during a St. Charles Liquor Commission meeting to review the complaints again the Alibi Bar & Grill, 12 N. 3rd St., and The Beehive Tavern & Grille, 204 W. Main St. The Alibi, which was awarded its Class B-3 liquor license nearly 13 months ago, will have it’s license suspended for three days — from 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, through 2 a.m. Saturday, March 23. Nearly 13 months after winning its Class B-3 liquor license, the Alibi Bar & Grill, 12 N. 3rd St., will find itself defending that license for a second time before the St. Charles Liquor Commission. Mayor Donald DeWitte said in an email Friday that the Alibi is scheduled to appear before the Liquor Commission on March 4, the same day The Beehive Tavern & Grille, 204 W. Main St., is scheduled to appear on two unrelated incidents. The Liquor Commission meets at 4:30 p.m. The Alibi has been cited in connection with a Jan. 13, 2013 incident in which police were called to the establishment at 12:58 a.m. on a report of a woman vomiting in the bathroom. St. Charles Police Target the Alibi

Free drinks offer draws ire of other downtown bars feeling City Council pressure. Liquor license holder cited with two violations.

It would appear that at least a few downtown St. Charles liquor license holders have taken to heart the St. Charles City Council’s proposed crackdown on over serving alcohol and a proliferation of drunken brawls in recent months. Saturday, one downtown bar owner told police he and another bar manager had received information from their customers that the Alibi, 12 N. 3rd St., was serving free drinks for commercial purposes and was even advertising it, both of which are prohibited by the state liquor code, according to police. Police issued one citation on each of the charges to Richard A. Simpson Jr., 33, of Downers Grove, who told officers he was the holder of the Alibi’s liquor license.
